(AP) - A public campaign to save the life of a pit bull on death row has led to a temporary stay of execution. The dog, Kron, attacked a horse three weeks ago near Merlin, a rural community in southwest Oregon. The Josephine County Board of Commissioners ruled that Kron must be euthanized but reversed course last week after an outcry that included a protest in Downtown Grants Pass. The three commissioners voted unanimously to send the case to a hearings officer, the Daily Courier reported (https://is.gd/1h8wLF). County records show the dog is owned by Brye Rogers but was staying with Leah Harp, whose property is a few hundred feet from where the horse lives. The dog left Harp’s yard through a broken gate, said David Pitts, an animal protection officer who investigated the incident. Horse owner John Bartlett told commissioners that he fired at the dog when it was in a pasture and again when it charged his wife. Kron was shot twice, once in the head, but survived and is now at the county animal shelter. Bartlett’s grandson, 15-year-old Drew Hogan, told authorities in a written statement that the dog at one point had latched onto the nose of the horse, a 30-year-old mare named Hummer. “The dog was dangling off the horse’s nose,” he wrote. “The horse (was) trying to get the dog off by flailing her head.” Veterinarian Todd Bershad said the horse suffered an 8-inch cut over its nasal bone and a cut to the interior of its left nostril. An online petition started on the dog’s behalf describes the injury as a small laceration that didn’t require medical attention. The petition had more than 18,250 supporters as of Friday morning. “This is heinous disregard for a well-loved member of a family that quite literally didn’t hurt anyone or any animal,” states the petition, written before the stay of execution. “If you have your four-legged friend sitting next to you while you read this, think of how lucky they and you are to be comfortable and not in pain... and not facing death over a trivial matter.” The Daily Courier reports the hearings officer will be Robert Bain, a local attorney. A hearing date has not been set. County attorney Wally Hicks said hearings officers used to consider most cases involving dogs, but the practice was discontinued because “everybody was appealing” the decisions to commissioners. The Toyota was loaded with a full tank of gas, and seven sheets of plywood in the back. A report was filed for unauthorized use of a vehicle (UUV). *A fellow phoned 911 from the 28100 block of Redwood Hwy. at 11:54 a.m. because he located his Jeep that had been stolen two nights before. His keys were returned to him, but he wanted law enforcement on the line, just in case. The Jeep was towed from the scene. *An accidental pocket- dial 911 call was received from the 5500 block of Rockydale Road at 2:24 p.m. *A deputy checked on a vehicle on the west side of the Eight Dollar Bridge River Access at 2:36 p.m. *The intended recipient of a restraining order (RO) was not available at 2:49 p.m. in the 200 block of Samarkand Drive. *Campers at Little Falls Trailhead Campground were warned for staying beyond the 14-day limit during a sweep starting at 2:52 p.m. *An RO was served to an individual in the 900 block of Caves Hwy. at 3:10 p.m. *At 3:16 p.m., transients were congregating near the Umpqua Bank in the 100 block of N. Redwood Hwy. They were approaching customers at the ATM and asking for free samples. The property owner requested that they be trespassed, so three of them gathered their items and left. Joseph Ainsworth, 38, was detained at Josephine County Jail, charged with failure to appear on a felony warrant. *A hitchhiker with a backpack was wearing a brown Carhartt jacket and a baseball cap while traveling in the 3400 block of Deer Creek Road at 3:56 p.m. The wanderer was described as in his 30s, 5- foot-10, 200 pounds, and he was spotted taking mail from the 2800 block of Deer Creek Road. Friday, March 31 *At 12:02 p.m. the owner of a wrecking yard in the 27700 block of Redwood Hwy. phoned a fellow regarding his black 1999 Jeep Cherokee, which had been towed following a wreck earlier in the week. A couple of people swore that he had sold the Jeep to them, and they were not about to leave without it. However, the fellow stated that they had “fake paperwork”, so he was searching for his (alternate) ownership documents. *ADT contacted a home owner regarding an alarm in their garage in the 5600 block of Deer Creek Road at 12:52 p.m. *An older white Winnebago motorhome had been parked in the 200 block of Illinois River Road since March 29, but no one was seen nearby. This was logged as beyond available resources by JCSO. *A restraining order was served at 4 p.m. in the 18300 block of Redwood Hwy. Outside the Valley *Two dozen listings. Saturday, April 1 *Securitas reported a hit on the alarm at the drive-up ATM at the Washington Federal Bank in the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy. at 10:47 a.m. *A chap in the 17200 block of Redwood Hwy. summoned 911 when he accidentally hit the emergency button on his phone at 4:27 p.m. *Law enforcement stopped a vehicle on the west side of Lake Selmac near Reeves Creek at 5:35 p.m. *Fools who steal door handles need to get a grip.
