chance that it won’t
be approved because

competition with other
disasters around the
nation; namely a lot
flooding in California
then there’s a hurricane
as well,” Brandt
added. However,
the IVSWCD has
backup plans if the
funding isn’t approved
but those plans will
take longer, be more
complicated, and
generally take more
work to put into effect.
“We’re really hopeful
that the money will
come through and
we’re really glad to
be able to do these
important projects
in the community
where landowners
would otherwise be
on their own,” Brandt
concluded.
In the meantime,
the IVSWCD is going
to do as much prework
as they can because
once the funding is
approved they have
220 days to complete
all the projects which
will have to be done
one at a time. At this
time the IVSWCD
isn’t sure which
project will be first
in line but generally
the most urgent
project takes priority.
According to Brandt,
all work will be done
by local contractors
who will be notified
publically when the
IVSWCD is ready to
start taking bids.

The IVcanDo decided to sponsor
this event because it led the I.V.
community in the process of writing the
20/20 Strategic Plan and found that public
safety was residents’ number one priority.
According to Kate Dwyer
IVCanDO’s community development
coordinator, “Public Safety is more
than law enforcement, it includes
emergency preparedness. This winter

are vulnerable to disruption of services
and need us to organize our systems for
helping each other. It takes only a small
emergency to point out how much we
rely on each other. IVCanDO is pleased
to help people get the skills and systems
in place to help their neighbors in
adversity.”
Dwyer hopes that participants in the
Prepare Fair gain “a better understanding
of the comprehensive mapping tools
online through Josephine County that
we can use to know who our neighbors
are and to get phone numbers and meet
people so that if we need help we know
each other better.”
One of CERT’s goals is to help
citizens anticipate and prepare for the
kinds of emergencies that can happen in
the Valley, such as loss of power, loss of
communication lines, wildfires, structure
failures like roads and bridges due to
earthquake, flooding or snow. The CERT
group is also looking for active interested
residents to volunteer to join and train
with them.
