Wednesday, March 22, 2017 Page A-3 Sports IVHS track team does well at Crusader Relays Ray Brown IVN Contributing Writer The Illinois Valley High School track team competed in its first meet for 2017 Tuesday, March 14 at the Crusader Relays at St. Mary’s High School in Medford, where 12 teams competed. Distance ace, Tyler Blind, finished fourth out of 15 in an event he had never tried before, the 2,000 meter steeple chase with a time of seven minutes, 23 seconds. The team of Destiny Alaxander, Isabella Idoine, Meig Peters, and Amy Burns ran well and despite a costly baton exchange, they retook their lead and won the JV 4x100 relay in a time of 1:03, just edging Lost River by a third of a second. The boys JV 4x100 took third in a time of 51.6 seconds, with Josh Medina, Kai Montoya, Jaden Kostic and Brennan Wilson. The varsity girls 4x100 IVHS boys’ golf scores The IVHS golf season is in full swing. The Cougars hit the links in Grants Pass against Hidden Valley, Rogue River, Klamath, Mazama, North Valley, Brookings and Ashland. The boys finished with the following scores: Christian Engles, 122; Gabe Evans, 134; Alec Hendricks, 151; and Odis Kitchens, 148. The girls 4x200 team of Jonas, Alaxander, Hammers and C. Burns took second out of seven teams with a time of 2:07. The relay team of Medina, Hames, Max Mistretta, and Blind ran a solid 4:14 to win the boys 4x400 meter relay. Some highlights of field events were Sanjuana Mendoza throwing the shot 23 feet, 6 1/2 inches; Taylor Hammers long jumping 13 feet,10 inches; Tessa Turner also with a 11 feet, 7 ½ inches jump; and Brennan Wilson with a 14 feet, 4 inches long jump. The Cougars track team is coached this year by Paul Jackson, Scott Thornhill and Ray Brown and will compete next at Brookings April 8. The team is working harder this year and anxious to compete in their upcoming meets over the next seven weeks. Beavers back in the Sweet 16 after 64-52 win over Creighton By Anne M. She got a win, too, so her senior season lives on. In the varsity boys 4x100, the team of Jacob Bafia, Cullen Beery, Ryland Thornhill, and Joseph Hames got around the track in 51.6 seconds. The girls 800-meter sprint medley varsity race was run by Brooks, C. Burns, Alaxander, and Jonas for third in 2:11. Thornhill, Bafia, Beery, and Medina took fifth Taylor’s Country Store 7 seed Creighton on Sunday. Oregon State (31-4) will go on to face third-seeded Florida State in Stockton, California. The Seminoles defeated six- seeded Missouri 77-55 earlier Sunday in Tallahassee, Florida, for their third straight trip to the Sweet 16. Fellow senior Gabriella Hanson also had 13 points for the Beavers, who are making a fourth consecutive appearance in the tournament. Last season the Beavers advanced to the Final Four before falling to eventual champion UConn. Sydney Lamberty had 19 for Creighton (24-8), which trailed by as many as 15 points.
