Page A-10 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 Little League building broken into ... again Annette McGee Rasch IVN Senior Contributing Writer Illinois Valley’s Little League just can’t catch a break. Last week, once again, the Little’s League’s building at Jubilee Park was vandalized. Little League supporters have lost track of how many items the building has been broken into in recent years. “There’s nothing there of value. It’s senseless. They are just making a huge mess,” said Little League organizer Shelley Davis. “Though they did burn some things this time, so we have the state fire marshal working on this case now.” The city of Cave Junction tends Jubilee Park and is forced to spend endless time and resources trying to keep up with the damages done to city property on a regular basis. Cave Junction’s city recorder, Ryan Nolan, said “They break in all the time. This time they broke into the snack shack and the Little League’s shed. Weekly, the city is doing repairs to the bathrooms and other structures, cleaning up vandalism and painting over graffiti. And especially the last few years, there’s been a lot more vandalism here.” The effort to protect the park and keep it clean and wholesome for families and children ebbs and flows with the seasons and varying levels of community involvement. Often, a rash of park damages brings volunteers out to help keep an eye on the park and prevent criminal activity. “Unfortunately we can spend a lot of money putting in cameras to protect a shed or the bathrooms, but it doesn’t really accomplish anything, damaging a $200 piece of equipment at the park won’t get anybody in very much trouble, even if they’re caught,” Nolan added. “Our best results have been spending more money making the buildings less accessible. At this point they are just damaging the walls,” Nolan said. “Hopefully people can help Little League purchase a cargo container to make it much more difficult to break into.” McLanahan named to All- State football Congratulations to Skylar McLanahan for being named to the second team 3A All-State football team.
