Cougar hoopsters off to a slow start
Boys
The Cougars traveled to Crescent City
Tuesday, Dec. 6, to take on the Del Norte
Warriors in nonleague action. After Del Norte
scored the first five points, the Cougars got to
the hoop often in the first half to keep it close,
with a first quarter score of 13-11 and 30-21 at
the half. The Warriors turned up the intensity
in the second half, particularly on defense,
finishing the game with a score of 58-31.
Coach Matt Knight said of his team, “Our
last game versus Del Norte out of Crescent
City was a hard fought battle for the first half.
During the second half, my guys ran out of
gas a little bit and they kind of ran away with
the game. I am proud of the way my team
played during the first half of the game and am
looking forward to us playing more games like
that. Skylar McLanahan had one of the best
defensive games anyone on our team has had
in a couple of years.”
The Cougars will play next at home
against New Hope Christian Tuesday, Dec. 13,
and will be home again the following Tuesday,
Dec. 20, going against Pleasant Hill.
Girls
The girls traveled to Crescent City where
the Del Norte Warriors slowly pulled away
throughout the game, scoring a few more
points than the Cougars each quarter. The
second quarter started at 10-3, with Illinois
Valley reeling off five quick points. The
Warriors then put on a rebounding show and
kept pulling away. The final score was 45-26.
The Lady Cougars’ next home games will
be against New Hope Christian Dec. 13 and
Pleasant Hill Dec. 20.

Valley, Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m.
-noon at the I.V. branch library.
The Illinois Valley Community
Development Organization
(IVCanDO) is forming a Child Care
Business Cohort. The introductory
session Feb. 11 will explain the
different levels of certification required
to provide paid child care. Participants
who decide to pursue this opportunity
will then be welcome to join the Child
Care Business Cohort, where they
can take the four required classes to
become fully certified, without leaving
the Illinois Valley. Cohort members can
also receive free business counseling
and can apply to IVCanDO’s
microloan program for low interest
loans to start their business.
“There is currently ZERO
licensed or certified child care
available in the Illinois Valley,” said
Kate Dwyer, IVCanDO’s community
development coordinator. “Establishing
child care solutions is an action item in
the IV 20/20 Community Vision and
Strategic Plan, and traveling to Grants
Pass or Medford can be a barrier for
local entrepreneurs. It’s unique that
we are bringing the classes here, and
tying them to business counseling and
financial assistance. We want local
people to succeed while serving local
needs.”
People who are currently doing
child care without certification can
feel safe attending this class to learn
how to become legal. “No one here is
looking to turn in casual operators,”
said Dwyer. “Barring evidence of
abuse or dire lack of safety, it’s none
of our business what folks are doing
now. We are here to help people
become legitimate businesses.” The
introductory class is also open to
people who work in family agencies
or job placement to come learn more
about this sector so they can advise
their clients.
