Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, October 26, 2016 STATS . . . Continued from A-1 From 2009 to 2010 the OSP made an average of 263 arrests per year. In 2011 OSP arrests increased quite a bit, averaging 388 arrests per year into 2015. However because the rise began in 2011, before the drop in sheriff’s funding, there may be other factors involved in this increase. But what is clear is the startling upward trend in offenses reported to OSP, from 372 offenses in 2011 to 786 in 2015. That’s an increase of 53 percent. The graph on A-1, which totals sheriff and OSP statistics, tells the full story. Despite the intervention of OSP, total arrests have dropped, while total reported offenses have increased significantly. Page A-3 “The graphs show a fairly clear account of what’s going with the crime situation in our county,” said Daniel. “I understand that the Illinois Valley is a hot spot,” he added. “The lack of 24 hour coverage is a huge problem.” County Measure 17-74, on the ballot in November, proposes to add a safety levy of $1.42 per $1,000 of property value. Daniel said that, if the levy passes, patrols will increase, although how much of an enhancement in service will depend upon the public safety committee. The measure mandates establishment of a public safety Oversight Committee to ensure that all funds are expended on law enforcement. “My goal,” said Daniel, “is to provide 24 hour service in the Illinois Valley.” Sheriff's Office Oregon State Police (OSP) 1500 900 800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 0 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Reported Offenses 2014 1000 500 0 2009 2015 2010 2011 2012 2013 Reported Offenses Arrests 2014 2015 Arrests All custom jewelry designs & repAirs done in house!
