The Illinois Valley Cougars football team hosted the Lakeview Honkers on a stormy Friday night in Cave Junction. The Cougars lost the Oct. 14 league match-up 13-8. Although the rain eased up as play began, conditions on the saturated field had degraded thoroughly by the second quarter. Wet mud squelching through the turf hobbled the rush and slick footballs grounded pass plays. Lakeview scored two touchdowns and an unsuccessful two-point conversion in the first half. The Cougars mounted a strong late second-quarter drive and threatened to retaliate. With a faked field- goal attempt from the 8-yard line, the Illinois Valley offense earned a fresh set of downs within 2 yards of the end zone, but quarterback Ross Gaynor’s rushing attempt with 0:01 left in the quarter was stopped just shy of the goal line as time expired. “We just didn’t push [Lakeview] off the line,” said Cougars’ head coach Bruce Reece. “This was our game to win [but] that’s that next step; we’ve got to be able to take a game like this and step through it…” The Cougars mounted a tough defense that held Lakeview scoreless in the second half. Reece was pleased with the defensive effort. “That’s the most a team’s punted against us all year.” Illinois Valley’s Skylar McLanahan scored on a short touchdown run with almost six minutes left in the fourth quarter. The touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Gaynor to Elijah Polk, brought the Cougars to within five points of the Honkers. Illinois Valley regained possession with more than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter but were unable to capitalize. Lakeview ran out the clock, and the rain returned in earnest as the players left the field. “We put some great drives together,” Reece remarked. “Even as sloppy as conditions were, we did put some great drives together and I commend the players for the job they did.” The Cougars are now 1-5 for the season, 0-1 in Southern Cascade League play. They will host the Cascade Christian Challengers (5-2) in Cave Junction Friday, Oct. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. Name: Gabriela Rapley Week: September 26th October 1st Reason: Is a very versatile athlete, is new to volleyball this year, has made great improvement over a short time, maintains a positive attitude and always gives her best effort, a great team player.
