Wednesday, October 12, 2016 Page A-3 Sports Cougars run away with win Michelle Binker IVN Contributing Writer The Illinois Valley Cougars enjoyed a decisive 46-8 victory over the Rogue River Chieftains Friday evening, Oct. 7 in Rogue River. Illinois Valley was 0-4 heading into the contest, and looking for the first win of what had been a trying season. “The effort we’re making in practice is beginning to show,” said senior running back Skylar McLanahan, who had nine carries for 156 rushing yards and four touchdowns. “It feels like the first time we clicked as a team.” Quarterback Ross Gaynor passed for 121 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver Chase Nelson caught two touchdown passes and running back Dylan Yarbro scored with a three-yard run in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. Senior Zak Lindell had 16 carries adding 83 rushing yards for the Cougars. Rogue River enjoyed significant possession time, but the Cougar defense held the Chieftains “ “The effort we’re making in practice is beginning to show,” Skylar McLanahan IVHS Senior scoreless during the first half. Rogue River’s only touchdown play came midway through the fourth quarter, followed by a successful two-point conversion. The win “feels really good,” said head coach Bruce Reece, “Things are going as they should be and we executed offensively like we can. “I can see us building and getting better and better,” Reece said. Two Cougars were injured at Rogue River. Kicker Pepe Mendoza reportedly hyperextended a knee during a point- after attempt, and lineman Mason Thornhill was taken from the field by ambulance after a serious hit in the third quarter left him momentarily unconscious. Shaken, Thornhill rejoined the team for the bus ride home.
