Charges can be amended or dismissed.) *** Sunday, Aug. 28 * Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) conducted a patrol of the area from Eight Dollar Road to Days Gulch beginning at 10:34 a.m. *There was a motorcycle acci- dent on Airport Drive and Redwood Hwy. at 3:04 p.m., and the driver was transported to Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) for treatment. *Nothing was heard on a 911 call from the 8100 block of Caves Hwy. at 6:25 p.m. Outside the Valley *Fifteen incidents. on charges of second-degree crimi- nal trespass. *SOS Alarm reported an acti- vated alarm in the 33100 block of Redwood Hwy. at 2:53 p.m. *At 3:30 p.m. a tan Subaru was off the road approximately 600 feet up Westside Road from Red- wood Hwy. The SUV was ditched but not abandoned; there was a note saying that a tow truck was en route. *Another alarm registered a hit in the 100 block of Warren Road at 4:37 p.m., according to SOS. *A gold-colored Oldsmobile and a primer-gray Isuzu pickup truck were racing 50 m.p.h. through Jubilee Park near the playground at 6:22 p.m. The reckless drivers then took off terrorizing other motorists on River Street. Information was re- layed to Oregon State Police (OSP). Outside the Valley Monday, Aug. 29 *Melissa Lowenstein, 49, was reportedly scaring children at Jubilee Park at 12:20 p.m. She was detained at Josephine County Jail *Seventeen situations. Tuesday, Aug. 30 *Video cameras at Rogue Truck Bodies on Finch Road filmed the theft of an Expedition on Aug. 29 between 7:13 and 7:45 a.m. The truck owner went on a hunting expedition and located his vehicle at 9:35 a.m. on Aug. 30. When he recovered his truck, there were scratches and a dent on the passen- ger-side fender which appeared to have been caused by off-road driv- ing by the thief. The truck owner justifiably placed a few dents upon the car thief, who flew the coop into the bushes towards Kerby Trailer Park. The crook was described as 5’8” tall, bald, in his late 30s, wear- ing dark shorts and a long-sleeve dark flannel shirt. *On Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m. a violent man punched and pis- tol-whipped a person inside the O’Brien Country Store, in front of customers and employees. Video footage recorded the incident, and the disc was submitted to JCSO for review. *A deputy drove out Fernwood Drive past a Bureau of Land Man- agement gate to check on a camp that was reportedly in that area. The search was fruitless. *JCSO inspected the area above Page Creek and Takilma at 12:38 p.m. *The 3200 block of Waldo Road was patrolled by another deputy at 12:38 p.m. *At 12:57 p.m. campers at Hogue Meadow were warned for residing on public lands, and they were advised to leave the area by the end of the day. *Investigation continued at 1:03 p.m. in the 2400 block of Westside Road. *There was a grass fire on Waldo Road and O’Brien Road at 1:32 p.m. *At 3:18 p.m., JCSO pulled over a gray Honda Civic in the 23500 block of Redwood Hwy. The motorist was cited for no valid operating license and uninsured driving. The illegal driver said that she planned on returning to Idaho to turn herself in. If she fails to do so, her probation officer will place a warrant for her arrest. *Research continued at 3:19 p.m. in the 200 block of N. Red- wood Hwy. *Inquiry resumed at 4:28 p.m. at 222 W. Lister Street. *OSP handled a rollover motor vehicle accident in the 100 block of Draper Valley Road at 5:34 p.m. Outside the Valley * Fourteen log entries. Wednesday, Aug. 31 *SOS reported an alarm in the 600 block of E. River Street at 11:53 a.m. *A duress alarm was inadver- tently activated during an employee training session at Smoking Tees in the 100 block of N. Redwood Hwy. at 1:45 p.m. (‘No matter what, don’t touch this button here because it sets off the alarm.’ Dude! What did you do?) Outside the Valley *Twenty incidents. The Archive Zone: by Hillary Mohr from the Illinois Valley News archives This week we go back to Sept. 4, 1986. The Valley was recovering from the most successful Labor Day weekend yet. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the back to school rush with this edition of the Archive Zone. Lions pleased with results of 1986 Labor Day Festival. Described as “the biggest weekend we’ve had in Cave Junction,” the 14th annual Labor Day Festival and Parade, sponsored by the Illinois Valley Lions Club history. “All three days were more heavily attended than we’ve seen before,” said club President Wyly Melton. The professional logging show Sunday, Aug. 31, attracted some 1,500 spectators, and the parade Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day, also was well-attended. Crowds lined the route along Redwood Highway, and the festival in Jubilee Park was busy until later that evening, Melton said. Among the 75 parade entries – also a near-record turnout – were a group of Vietnam veterans, most wearing their old uniforms. As they marched past, many of them limping, and one in a wheelchair, spectators gave them continuous applause. “It was a great success overall,” said Melton. “We don’t have all the figures, but we know that the Lions Sight and Blind Fund, and Community Fund, will be well served.” He said the Lions already are thinking about the 15th annual event. There is a possibility that besides a pro logging show Sunday, there could be an amateur logging show Saturday. Rough & Ready Lumber slated for state excellence nomination. Rough & Ready Lumber Co. of Cave Junction will be nominated by the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce for the Governor’s Corporate Excellence Awards Program. The chamber board agreed to nominate the company during its meeting Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, in the Junction Inn. “We should cite them for their business excellence,” said Director Leonard Frick. “They are a great help to the Valley’s economic development, and they are heavily involved in community service.” Frick will work with other board members to fill out the nomination form. Rough & Ready was complimented during the meeting for its willingness to provide equipment, as for fighting brush fires, and for projects such as the recent work at the Illinois Valley Airport. In addition, the company, which employs 220 persons, is a major participant in community events, such as the Labor Day Parade.
