This year’s Labor Day Festival was a tremendous success. Some of us have been here since the first modern celebration began in 1973; it has evolved from a small club celebration to what we have now. It takes the Lions Club and all the other organizations in the Valley to bring it off. Thus we come to Wednesday after Labor Day; the first day of school. Citizens please remember to drive with attention to our little citizens as they are our future leaders, the ones we especially love. So do not pass a stopped school bus or run or speed through stop signs to ensure the health and safety of passengers. This was the last year that I will be riding in the parade as mayor of Cave Junction. Remember this is election year and we do have three races going on - the position of council No. 2, council No. 3 and mayor’s position. I will not use this forum to tell you how to vote but I will tell you it doesn’t take that much to VOTE and take your ballot to the drop box at City Hall. We as Oregonians have the privilege of voting in the privacy of our homes. Please do that. Whatever party or group you are with please vote! We must not lose that right or privilege to perform our civic duty. I have enjoyed being your mayor these last six years. Right or wrong, I have tried my best to do what is best for the voters. Thank you Carl Jacobson Jr. Selma man killed on bicycle crossing 199 A 45-year-old man was killed Thursday, Sept. 1, on Highway 199 near milepost 20 in Selma after attempting to cross the roadway on a bicycle. Police report that Robert L. Green, 45, whose address is unknown, hit the side of a truck and was thrown into a 25-foot RV being towed by the vehicle. The collision occurred at about 12:45 p.m. A preliminary investigation by the Oregon State Patrol (OSP) revealed a 1997 Ford pickup towing a 25-foot RV was traveling southbound on Highway 199 when Green attempted to cross all lanes of traffic, colliding with the side of the Ford. Green was thrown from his bike and struck the RV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford, Michael S. Mann, 58, of Redmond, was not injured. Highway 199 was reduced to one lane of alternating travel for two hours while the investigation was conducted. OSP was assisted by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois Valley Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Alcohol is being considered a contributing factor as witnesses believed Green was impaired, according to police. (Photos by Dan and Laura Mancuso, Illinois Valley News) 2016 I.V. Obituaries “Otto” James Richards-Crampton Feb. 4, 1943 - Aug. 30, 2016 James Rich- ards- Crampton, 73, of Takilma better known as “Otto,” died Tues- day morning Aug. 30 at his home. James was born in Rahway, New Jersey. He at- tended Lehigh Uni- versity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. After he graduated he worked for a period of time at Exxon Oil. He also pursued a ca- reer with the National Forest Service, where he was proud to have spent some time fight- ing forest fires. In the 1980s he opened his own business as an auto mechanic and later as a well pump specialist, a service he performed until his re- tirement in 2004. James was a resi- dent of Westfield, N.J., New York, N.Y. and Pacifica, Calif. before spending over four de- cades in Takilma, the place he felt most at home. James was a long time member of the BMW motorcycle club and enjoyed touring the country. He loved movies and had an ex- tensive collection. He was also a huge foot- ball fan ever since at- tending Super Bowl I. James is survived by his daughters, Hal- ey and Tara Crampton; his grandchildren, Isa- belle, Paolo and Ayden; and sisters, Sally Bo- gert and Barbara Row- land. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom; his parents, Al- ton and Frances; and his two sons, Ru and Damien. James was great- ly loved and will be missed. A service took place at his home in Takilma Sunday Sept. 4 and at graveside in Westfield, N.J. at Fair- view Cemetery Sept. 7.
