Almost half surveyed said they will visit a national park next year. This surpasses the park usage of both Generation X and Baby Boomers. This revival in travel to national parks is expected to continue in 2017. The more than 307 million visitors in 2015 surpassed attendance from all previous years. National parks have never been so popular and the growth is expected to continue in the coming years. The news couldn’t come at a better time, coinciding with the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary Aug. 25, 2016. In honor of that occasion, national parks are offering a discount on certain dates. Also, free admission will be offered for all sites that charge an entrance fee Aug. 25-28 and Nov. 11. National parks are considered a must-see by most Americans and 85 percent of Americans have visited a national park. The most popular choices are the Great Smokey Mountains, the Grand Canyon and Attendance at the Oregon Caves National Monument has increased so far this year. According to Vicky Snitzler, superintendent of the Oregon Caves, official numbers lag a month behind but it looks to be around a 4 percent increase over 2015. Snitzler attributes the increase to the centennial marketing along with the recent designation as a national monument. “We have also noticed an increase at the trailheads with more hikers enjoying the trial systems,” Snitzler added. More and more Americans are discovering the joys of our national parks in recent years. A recent AAA survey showed that 42 percent of Americans are likely to visit a national park again next year, and 37 percent are more than likely. These parks are especially popular with the millennials who are discovering the beauty and Oregon Caves Ghost Room. the Rocky Mountains. The top choices for future visits are Yellow Stone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon. Oregonians favor Crater Lake, Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, according to AAA. The seasons most favored by Americans for visiting the parks are spring, followed by autumn and lastly summer. Per the national parks website, “We’re inviting visitors of all ages to join in the celebration throughout the month! With special events across the country, and free admission to all 412 national parks from Aug. 25 through Aug. 28, the National Park Service is encouraging everyone to #FindYourPark / #EncuentraTuParque for the centennial! Hundreds of other August events across the country can be found at FindYourPark.com and EncuentraTuParque.com.” Marie Dodds, the director of Government and Public Affairs of AAA said, “Our survey shows that national parks have never been so popular. Travelers plan to take even more vacations to parks in the coming years. Denny Hare’s Caves Highway ranch was visited with vandal “artists” handy work on Hare’s pick-up truck reading: “HIPPIE PIG”, plus “Hippies are Trojan horses, You are leaving dirt, dope and disease” (on the reverse side of ‘Aquarius Gift Shop’ signs), and hammer and sickles. Hare said he had retired about 10 p.m.; had heard nothing. *5.9 miles Happy Camp Rd. to receive oil Aug. 23. The Siskiyou National Forest will apply dust oil on 0.9 mile of the Happy Camp Road No. 4007 on Aug. 23, according to W.P. Ronayne, forest supervisor. Dust abatement will begin at the end of the Josephine County Road at the California State Line. Josephine County will also dust oil approximately 5 miles of this road on Aug. 23. *Dr. Versteeg Elected to AAGP. Dr. Charles N. Versteeg has been elected to active membership in the American Academy of General Practice (AAGP), a national association of more than 31,000 family doctors. As a member of the AAGP, Dr. Versteeg will be required to complete 150 hours of postgraduate medical study every three years. The program, unique among national medical associations, is designed to help member physicians keep abreast of the latest scientific developments in medicine. *Sid Bazett’s daughter dies in fall. Bettina (Tina) Lynn Bazett, 14, daughter of Rep. Sidney Bazett, fell 100 feet to her death on the shore of Crater Lake Sunday, Aug. 17, 1969. The Stockton, California, girl was walking with her home town companion, Charlotte Miller, along the Cleetwood Cove Trail, headed for the boat launching area for a boat trip around the lake when she apparently lost her balance. Acting Park Superintendent Paul Larson, said the trail is “fairly well used.” Her body was recovered about 50 feet from the water’s edge.
