Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, August 24, 2016 Page A-3 Rogue River Subway expands to Cave Junction Brings along Mama DeLuca’s Pizza Annette McGee Rasch IVN Senior Contributing Writer The days of “jonesing” for a Subway sandwich are almost over in Cave Junction. A new Subway store is slated to open this fall, in the building that formerly housed Evergreen Bank. Mama DeLuca’s Pizza will also be offered in the same building. Similar to the Subway operation, the pizzas are made-to- order in front of customers, utilizing a speed oven. Customers will also have a “take or bake” option. Mama DeLuca’s Pizza was developed by the Subway Corporation as a co- location for Subway Restaurants. “In addition to pizza, we’ll be offering boneless chicken wings, breadsticks and calzones,” explained Michael Rodgers, who along with his wife, Ada Rodgers, are developing the Subway and Mama DeLuca’s Pizza franchise in Cave Junction. “We also received approval to bring in ICEE,” which are frozen drinks in a variety of flavors. “The most common are the Coca Cola, blue raspberry and cherry flavors. But we’ll switch it up with different flavors of the month. And, we’ll also have a drive though at the restaurant.” The Rodgerses also own and operate a Subway in Rogue River, which they opened in February 2015, though their experience with Subway goes much further back. “Ada has been in the quick service restaurant business for 25 plus years and has been associated with Subway for 20 years. She used to oversee 20 Subway restaurants in Southern Oregon, from Roseburg to Ashland,” Michael Rodgers said. “We just decide to go off on our own and start our own restaurant. Ada’s experience is a real benefit for us.” Michael Rodgers hopes to have the new store open sometime October. “That’s our target opening,” he said. “It’s a beautiful location and a well-built structure, with easy access for customers. We’re currently removing the old infrastructure inside the building. We’re getting ready for the remodel.” The couple plans to hire 10 to 15 employees and will be interviewing local candidates for those positions. “At our Rogue River location, every one of our employees lives in Rogue River,” Michael Rodgers said, “and we’re going to do the same thing in Cave Junction.” Anyone interested in these jobs can go to: www.mysubwaycareer.com and then search for Cave Junction and apply online. Michael Rodgers says interviewing will begin in mid- September. “We offer competitive pay to our employees,” Michael Rodgers said. “Our whole philosophy is the golden rule, we want to do the best we can for our employees with pay and benefits, and not just give them minimum wage. We recognize fast-food work is hard work, so we want to compensate people accordingly. We’ve all worked for companies or people where you didn’t feel appreciated - and that makes it tough to come to work. We want to make sure that people enjoy the work atmosphere. We foster a team environment on the job. We’re all there - including Ada and I - to serve the customers and provide good service.” The Rodgerses are originally from Montana, but moved to Oregon 17 years ago. The couple have four children “all grown now and off into their lives in different states. Our three boys are in the military and our daughter is married and has two children.” Michaels Rodgers’ background is in senior housing. “I used to be a nursing home and retirement community administrator and that’s what brought us to Southern Oregon in the first place. But I was ready for a career change and I’m really happy to be involved in the restaurant business now. “We love the small town environment and we’re very excited about doing this in Cave Junction,” he added. “We really like the relationships of getting to know people, and you just don’t have that opportunity in bigger cities. And we’re excited about being able to offer all of our customers a number of choices (Courtesy photo for The Illinois Valley News) Mike and Ada Rodgers prepare the old Evergreen Bank building in preparation for the future Subway and Mama DeLuca’s Pizza. The Rodgers hope to be operational sometime in October. and options.” Subway has been around for 50 years, currently, there are 44,000 locations in 112 countries. All these stores are franchises (owned by individuals), and while many people own one or two stores like the Rodgerses, others own up to a few hundred franchises. By using the Subway brand, the franchises must purchase food and supplies from the parent corporation, which according to Michael Rodgers, prides itself in its “gold standard.” Most of the food comes from farmers that have met Subway’s quality control criteria, and effort is made to source the food as close as possible to each store location.
