Page A-2 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, June 8, 2016 Life in the Valley of Riches By DAN MANCUSO, Publisher This past Sunday the kids wanted to go a river spot on Illinois River Rd. I hate going there but with Dan Klapheke, our intern new to town, I wanted him to see our beautiful river. We arrived early enough to find suitable parking and found a great spot. Then things went south. A steady stream of young adults stated to pour in, coolers and beer bongs in tow. Everything that I saw Sunday is exactly why the U.S. Forest Service is banning alcohol on the road. They stayed away from us and had no impact on our day; actually I was entertained slightly with their antics. When we were leaving I realized that I did not recognize anyone there. Every person there was from somewhere outside of the Valley. The up side to that is hopefully they spent some money. As the people were filing in I was wondering where everybody parked, well I found out. Cars were parked everywhere. The white line rule was not even close to being followed. People were standing around their cars not in any hurry to move out of the way so others could pass. At one point a truck passed us with so little regard that he hit our side view mirror. I don’t know what the unintended consequences will be with the ban when it does take effect but it has to make things better than they are now. Stay cool, keep hydrated and thank you for picking up this week’s paper., enjoy! ~ djm Letters to the editor Illinois Valley News welcomes letters to the editor. Interested in a rewarding experience? Try volunteering at the Cave Junction Sheriff’s Substation. That’s where I volunteer every Friday, and not a single shift goes by that I’m not able to help someone in an important way. Recently, a family came in to report a series of frightening threats they had received. They were quite tentative, explaining they hadn’t been sure what to do, and had hesitated going to the police. I was able to immediately connect them with the dispatch operator, who took all the information from them for follow-up by a deputy within a couple of days. I also gave them instructions on how to obtain an anti- stalking order. I am certain this family would not have received the help they needed if the substation had not been open. That same day a woman came in. She appeared to have some dementia going on, as she was very confused about whether or not she had made a payment for a certain service and to which company she had made it. I attempted to help her sort things out in her mind, and she left, thanking me. (Hopefully her confusion did not return later.) Sometimes funny things happen as well. Unfortunately, confidentiality prevents me from being more specific. But just take my word for it. You will be laughing sometimes. But the problem is, right now the substation is open only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We want to extend to Tuesdays and Thursdays, but don’t have the volunteers. So if you’d like to participate in a great experience, come down to the substation and ask for a volunteer application.
