Wednesday, May 18, 2016 Page A-3 Sports LBMS burns up the track at districts Judy Hoyle IVN Contributing Writer The Lorna Byrne Middle School (LBMS) track and field team set new school records at the May 9 district track meet at Medford High School’s Spiegelberg Stadium. In addition, Mallorie Menning qualified for the May 26 state track “Meet of Champions” in Corvallis. She won second in the district for the shot put with a school record winning 35 feet 1 inch throw. She also took fifth place in the discus and is currently second all time LBMS record holder with a 68 feet 9 inch throw. Hannah Evens won second in the district in the 100 meter dash and established a new seventh grade record with a 13.56 time. She also took sixth in the 200 meter dash and is currently sixth all time at LBMS with a 30.17 finish. The boys’ 4 x 100 meter relay team won third at district and set a new school record of 52.31. The team included Ryland Thornhill, Joe Martinson, Colton Harms and Alec Hendrix. The girls’ 4 x 100 meter relay team won fifth at district. The team included Alexa Zabriskie, Maya Griffin, Celecia Poydack and Hannah Evans. Joe Martinson placed third in the 100 meter hurdles. Mike Giles placed fourth in the high jump and tied his school record mark of 5 feet. Alec Hendrix placed fifth in the high jump at 15-11.50. The LBMS track and field team enjoyed a banner year despite cold and rainy weather during much of the season. Twenty-five students participated this year and head coach Scott Thornhill is already looking toward next years’ program. “Coaches are our biggest need at this point. I will be moving on to I.V. High School (IVHS) and we will also be losing two assistant coaches. I will remain heavily involved because I will still be working at LBMS,” he said. “Expanding and growing the program will be an every year goal. I would love to go up to 30 kids next year and just continue to make our track program bigger and better. I feel that the success of our kids last year and this year are what draws our kids toward track and field. It is such a great sport. There is an event for every type of ability and every level of student.” Thornhill praised the new track surface, new discus ring area, sidewalks, hurdles and other improvements at IVHS. Many improvements were funded through the Rotary. “We will continue to build on what the Duck Derby dollars provided us a few years ago,” he said. IVHS performs well at first home meet Ray Brown IVN Contributing Writer It was an exciting evening at the new IVHS track, May 6. Every winner set a track record and new personal records (PRs) were set by Jacob Bafia, 100 meters; Kiowa Fitzwater, 100 meters; Zac Parker, shot put; Tyler Stevens, 200 meters; Evan Vallot, 400 meters; Hunter Wilde, 100 and 400 meters; Walker Zody, 800 meters; Amy Burns, 100 and 200 meters, Cynthia Burns, 100 and 200 meters; Margarita Hernandez, 100 meters; Grace Humphreys, discus; Roza Jonas, 800 meters; Lily Pyle, 100 and 200 meters; and Tessa Turner, 100 meter hurdles. As expected the fire department was on standby because Halona Jackson torched the new tack in both the 100 and 200 meters, setting personal records and track records at the same time. Jackson led both races from the start and was pulling away throughout. The new track records that she set should stand for some time to come. A week later the team was at the Southern Cascade League Championship at St. Mary’s High School in Medford where Jackson was at it again, winning both the 100 and 200 meter races, setting new personal records in both and placing second in the long jump. She was awarded Most Valuable for the Sprints. Setting personal records at this meet were Josh Medina, 400 meters; Evan Vallot, 800 meters; Walker Zody, 1500 meters; Hunter Wilde, 1500 meters; Austin Young, discus; Dean Hearn, triple jump; and Taylor Hammers, javelin. The relay quartet of Taylor Hammers, Cynthia Burns, Amy Burns and Meron Joans set a new record for their relay at 59.11 seconds in the 4 x 100 meter. Young and Savannah Baez came so close to qualifying for the state meet this week with Young setting a PR for the year and Baez overcoming leg injuries to match her all time best high jump of 4 feet 10 inches. As it stands, only Jackson will make the trip to Eugene to represent IVHS Thursday and Friday in three events.
