(Photo by Dan Mancuso, Illinois Valley News) Vikings break records on road to district Judy Hoyle IVN Contributing Writer It’s been a cool, rainy track season for the Lorna Byrne Middle School (LBMS) Vikings, but that hasn’t deterred students’ efforts, nor the results for what has shaped up to be one of the best track seasons in school history. Many school records fell during the regular season. (Look for the May 18 edition of the Illinois Valley News to find out what happened at the May 9 District Championships at Medford High School’s Spiegelberg Stadium.) This year’s Vikings team is one of the largest assembled, with 25 athletes competing. Head coach Scott Thornhill said, “This has been a special year for sure. We have had kids that have stepped up and far exceeded our expectations as well as exceeded their own. We knew we had good numbers again this year, but we were unsure of how competitive or athletic our group was going to be. From day one of practice they have come out and worked hard, listened to the coaches and put out the effort.” “This year’s season has not been great track weather,” Thornhill said. “We had only one meet with sunshine and the rest were just not what you want for ideal competition. We had one meet that was 41 degrees with rain and wind, but in typical form our kids stepped up with grit and guts and continued to improve their personal marks and were not fazed by the weather.” In advance of this week’s district championships several athletes have already set school records. Joe Martinson (eighth grade) set a record in the 100 meter hurdles, surpassing his brother Steven’s mark set in 2014. Joe also ranks fifth all-time in the 1500 meter race. Brennon Wilson (seventh grade) has set records in discus and long jump and is second all-time in the 100 meter hurdles. Jasun Hanshaw (eighth grade) has set a record in javelin. Andrew Mendoza (seventh grade) has set a record in the 200 meter and is second all- time in the100 meter. Mallorie Menning (eighth grade) has set a record in shot put and is third all-time in the discus. Mike Giles (eighth grade) has tied the record for high jump, is third all-time in shot put and fifth all-time in javelin. Tristen Engel (eighth grade) has tied the high jump record and Colton Harms (eighth grade) is second all-time in javelin. Alec Hendrix (eighth grade) has tied both the second record in the 100 meter and second record in the long jump. Ryland Thornhill (eighth grade) is tied for second in the 100 meter and fourth in shot put. In addition, a record has been set for the boys’ 4x100 relay with Ryland Thornhill (first leg), Joe Martinson (second leg), Colton Harms, (third leg) and Alex Hendrix (fourth leg). Hannah Evans: (seventh grade) has set a record in the girls’ 100 meter and is second all-time in the 200 meter. Victoria Jackson has set a new 1500 meter record and is third all-time in the 100 meter, while Julia Thomas (eighth) is third in the javelin. Athletic director Sarah McNamara said, “This has been such a wonderful coaching staff. These coaches have really shown our kids what being part of a team and what being a student athlete is all about, they have made this year’s track experience such a rewarding and fun time for our kids.” Assistant coaches this year have included Bob Clark, Matt Avila, Jeff Jenson, Dea Evans and Angel Engel and they have all praised the students’ efforts. Coach Clark said, “This group of kids have been such a great group to work with, I can’t wait for next year to see how far they can go.” Coach Avila said, “This being my first year coaching track I was overwhelmed at how fun and how rewarding the sport of track is. Our kids made it so fun to be part of and made coming to practice something I looked forward to.” Coach Evans said, “Watching how our kids worked both on the track and in the classroom was by far my most rewarding aspect of this year, these kids worked so hard.” And Coach Engel said, “I just love these kids.
