Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 Page A-9 Winding Trails: by Al Hobart Thursday, January 7, 1965 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Storm - Aftermath of the 1964 Christmas Flood Please accept my earnest apology – I started hollering “Uncle!” too late. Sure, I wanted a nice storm, even a nasty-nice one, just for some early winter fun, but I didn’t ask for all this. By the time I noticed what was going on, that my nice storm in its wild enthusiasm had forgotten about being nice and was just plain nasty, its momentum was so great and its mood so savage that it just wouldn’t listen to reason. And so I want to say that I’m sorry, and hope you will heed my sincere and humble apology. I promise that in the future when I send up a request for a big storm there’ll be some safety, anti-suffering riders included. The clause concerning peoples’ homes will be especially stressed. The storm’s fury is past now and, the strange and mighty river that was here is gone, leaving our modest little Illinois looking shaken and bedraggled, still somewhat swollen from the severe beating it has taken. Its familiar, pleasing attractive banks have been mutilated beyond recognition and left strewn with unsightly debris – uprooted trees torn from its pre- storm banks, thousands of waste logs, limbs and stumps washed down from the steep slopes of nearby logged-over areas and left stranded along the newly carved shores by the receding flood waters. While it lasted, the raging flood cut new channels, shortcuts paralleling the old river bed, and leaving bare, debris-laden islands where wide wooded river banks existed before. Throughout the Valley a number of important bridges across the Illinois and its feeder-streams, much used and needed by the Valley residents in their daily scurryings from place to place, have been washed away or badly damaged. The Big Flood’s one concession to our local populace was leaving at least one bridge intact across every important river branch. The narrow little bridge across the East Fork, between the Michels and O’Brien places, provided the only way for the residents of O’Brien to drive to Cave Junction, and thence, if desired, out of the Valley; the Althouse and Sucker Creek bridges at Bridgeview furnished the only way out for folks south and east of those two streams, the Sucker Creek bridge almost compelled to give up, its injured back bowed, but heroically withstanding the flood’s ravages to fulfill its community obligations – blessings on its stout concrete heart. My own few inconveniences due to the disastrous storm are minuscule compared with what many others in the Valley suffered – water lines destroyed, foot-bridge across Packer’s Creek washed away, private road blocked by fallen trees – piddling annoyances, really, merely adding to an already cluttered-up consciousness. But it is exasperating at times, like when I come in with dirty hands, unthinkingly flip open the faucet and no rushing stream splashes into the sink. And when I find myself planning a trip out, then suddenly realize that my road is utterly impassable, and likely to be for some time. I’m sometimes reminded of the true situation by strange little noises coming from the garage – my wee jeep, Little Toot, pawing and snorting with impatience to be hitting the trail. Now the weather has turned colder, the river is falling fast. The storm isn’t over but it has suddenly assumed an altogether different aspect – the downpour of rain has changed to a heavy, quiet snowfall. The ground outside is a solid white, and the evergreen boughs all around my cabin are sagging under the weight of the new snow. I was just struck with the thought that I won’t have to trade off my new skis for water skis after all, a procedure I was beginning to consider a necessity. It looks now like I’ll get to try them out after all. The big storm and devastating flood have brought considerable loss and hardship to the Valley. The digging out from under is in full swing, busy crews scuttling back and forth making the necessary repairs to our washed-out, storm-battered community, a stupendous job that will require a long time to complete. It has been a blow – in more senses than one. But, as a wise old philosopher was once heard to remark, in the face of distressing adversity: This, too, will pass. P.S. Another morning – with twenty- one inches of snow all around my cabin. Like the happy songster, I’ll be “Walking in the Winter Wonderland” – on snowshoes.
