(Photo courtesy of Kelli Augustadt for The Illinois Valley News) IVHS Soccer season comes to a close By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer The IVHS Boy’s JV soccer team finished their season this past Thursday during a home game against St. Mary’s. Head coach Brad Carlson is very proud of the boys and how far they came during the short season. “We were not even sure there was going to be a season because of payment dilemmas and other things,” Carlson said. St. Mary’s took the game with a final score of 3-6, but Carlson feels that the score does not reflect how the boys played as a team. “I am really impressed with how the boys played. They came out and played hard and strong,” said Carlson. Ethan Clark scored all three goals. One of the goals came on an assist from Action Phokaoeo, one came on a penalty kick and one was unassisted. With such a short season and many of the players new to the sport, Carlson feels that the boys were just starting to come together as a team and really understand the game of soccer. With each practice and game the boys grew closer and became a team. Carlson hopes that the boys continue to grow together and keep the love of the game close. By next season Carlson is confident that IVHS will have a great team to show competitors what the Cougar boys’ soccer team can do. With the boys finished up for the season, the girls still have two more league games. Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Lady Cougars matched up against the Cascade Christian Challengers. The Challengers, currently 8-3 overall (4-2 league), took the game with a score of 6-3. That doesn’t mean the Cougars didn’t try. The Lady Cougars were able to keep the game scoreless and hold the Challengers for the first 25 minutes. “This game was a big improvement from the last game we played against them,” said head coach Dick Matte. “Cascade has some fast players that are good and that presented prob- lems.” Before the first half was over the Challengers scored five goals, bringing the score to 5-0. During the second half, the Cougars started to come together. Goalkeeper Jessica Weber had some amazing saves, leaving Cascade high and dry for extra goals. Near the end of the match, the Challengers took control of the game and put one more goal in the net to finish out the game. “We were able to control the tempo of the second half,” Matte said. “It was a good learning experience for the girls. We improved from the last time.” The Lady Cougars have one more home game against Rogue River which is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the football field. Senior Night will kickoff the festivities prior to a 5:30 p.m. start time. Cascade bests IVHS in hard fought battle By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer The Cougars football squad struggled in their first league game of the season this past Friday, losing to longtime rivals Cas- cade Christian by a final score of 13-38. The Cougars had a bye the week before and head coach Ray Yarbrough focused on the basics to get his team ready to face the Challengers. Both teams seemed to struggle in the first quarter with rain and penalties, leaving the scoreboard blank. In the second quar- ter, Cascade Christian was able to make a touchdown pass, setting the pace for the rest of the night. That did not deter IVHS from giving it their all, though. “We battled,” Yarbrough said. “Our kids battled hard. For our kids to come out and fight through it and battle through a lot of adversity, you’ve got to be proud of that.” With almost 200 yards of penalties against them, the Cougars kept their heads up and pushed through the rain and mud. Logan Miller was able to take hold of the ball near the end of the second quarter and run it 65 yards before being brought down by the Challengers. In the next play, James Thompson ran the ball into the end zone giving the Cougars their first touchdown of the night. The Challengers answered back with another touchdown of their own with five seconds remaining in the first half, bringing the score to 7-17. The Cougars came out of the locker room and onto the field pumped up and remained that way throughout the second half. With IVHS unable to score in the third quarter, the game remained tight until the Challengers slipped in one more touch- down near the end. Though the Cougars continued to struggle with penalties, they were able to stay pumped up. Thompson ran for a 77-yard touchdown towards the end of the game, bringing the final to 13- 38. “Even though we were losing by a bunch of points, we’re not going to give up,” said Thompson, who had 16 carries for a total of 157 rushing yards. “We still play our A-game and we’re just not going to slow down, we are going to keep go- ing.” The season is not over for the Cou- gars yet. “Whether we are winning or losing, those kids line up and run the next play,” (Photo courtesy of Kelli Augustadt for The Illinois Valley News) Yarbrough said. “Sometimes it takes an eye-opener like this to make these kids st- Cougars defense kept the pressure on during the hat they can play with anybody.” home loss to Cascade Oct. 17.
