Cougars get back on track in Coquille By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer Faced with a tough defeat against Clatskanie (28-62) on Saturday, Sept 20, the IVHS football squad focused on intensity and effort during their practices this past week. Following that, the Cougars traveled to Coquille to take on the Red Devils in a victorious win. The team’s goal for this past game was to start off and stay competitive through the whole game. And they did just that. In the first half, they were able to put 35 points on the scoreboard. Running back James “The Train” Thompson and quar- terback CJ Manning, both seniors, led the Cougars offense. Thompson had 21 carries for 370 yards and three touchdowns. So far this season, Thompson, has had 81 carries for a total of 853 rushing yards. Manning completed nine of 15 passes during the game, had two interceptions and has accumulated a total of 984 yards this season. Logan Miller had five catches totaling 122 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on defense. Coquille, having an overall record of 2-2, put up a tough defense against the Cougars, but the Red Devils had a hard time closing the gap. The Red Devils were able to finish the game with a final touchdown with just 42 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score to 50-42 in favor of the Cougars. With another win in the books for IVHS, head coach Ray Yarbrough and the team will continue to focus on intensity and effort during practices. With four games left in the season, IVHS has an overall record of 3-1. “You’re only as good as your practice,” said Yarbrough. The football squad will go up against Fall River from Cali- fornia on Friday, Oct. 3, during a home game.
