Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 Backyard bird watching with Harry: by Harry Johnson Winter Suet feeding: Winter survival for our feathered friends is typically a tough proposi- tion. A lot of different food sources are now gone. For example, items such as berries which have ended their growing season, insects which have bedded down for the winter months, as well as any food source that might be possible except for the fact we are having a very cold icy winter. Suet becomes a popular feed- ing choice in the winter. Most suet blocks are only designed for winter time feeding as temperatures above 70 degrees cause those suet blocks to melt. Suet generally has a large per- centage of fat and consequently pro- vides a lot of much needed winter time calories. Additionally, most suet is mixed with other high energy foods such as peanuts, which provide addi- tional protein. These combinations of ingredients are much appreciated by the birds as they attempt to survive the long winter nights. In most cases, a large size suet cake will last a longer period of time, so you may not have to re-fill your suet feeder as often as a seed feeder. Suet has its own type of wire or cage feeder. Sometimes it can be combined with a hopper feeder of sorts, sometimes it can hang by it- self from a tree or on a pole. You can make your own wire basket with hardware cloth, or a similar wire. Ad- ditionally, there are upside down suet feeders to cater to clinging birds as well as woodpeckers, and discourag- es starlings. You’ll want to make sure you hang your suet in such a way as to keep it away from bears, raccoons and other critters. In addition to being able to pur- chase suet, you can also make suet at home with various suet recipes. Don’t be afraid to make your own variation of suet as well by adding sunflower seeds, peanuts, cracked corn kernels or whatever you think birds might like. Making suet at home can be a fun winter time project for the whole family. There are a number of reci- pes on the internet. Do a search for “homemade suet recipe” and get ready to make a batch that will please many bird visitors to your yard. Please remember, your suet will bring birds to your yard during these cold winter days. It will also bring bears and other critters you may not want in your yard, so be very careful where you put the suet and keep an eye out for large black critters. I have bears here in O’Brien and I can’t use suet. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night because of my barking dogs. On that note, I hope you all have a great time feeding your birds in your backyard. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:11-13 This promise was given to Israel roughly 2,600 years ago after they had been conquered and taken captive by the Babylonian King Ne- buchadnezzar. God made a wonder- ful promise to a wandering, sinful people. I believe there is an applica- tion here for all people when it says, “…you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” I had opportunity to talk with someone who had rejected the Bible as being full of errors and contradic- tions when sadly by his own testi- mony he had never read the Bible but had only taken someone else’s word for it. So, one day he came across a Bible and thought he would read it to see what was there. He found it had a powerful impact upon him. After reading to some extent, he came to realize that this book was not just an ordinary book, but that it declared a new way of living and called for a life given over to following Jesus Christ. He made that commitment, repenting of living his old life and believing the promises of God. His life has been changed, and he has been blessed. Here’s the catch. He began to seek God by reading the Bible and then found the Lord there waiting for him. How many people never look into the Word of God for themselves when there is so much there just waiting for them? Why don’t you look into the Bible for yourself? Start in the New Testament book of John. Don’t ne- glect that eternal part of yourself until it’s too late – and then “wish you had” looked into God’s Word. May God bless you as you seek Him in 2014. Why is it that no one wants to read the directions, or the in- struction manual, or the loan document papers, or most anything for that matter? After all, isn’t the main purpose of those types of things to get you familiar with the manufacturers intended use of their product and how to fix it if something should ever go wrong? It makes perfect sense. Who wouldn’t want to get the most, out of the manufacturers intended use and purpose of their cre- ation? But the reality is that we’re content with just reading or learning enough to deal with the immediate need at the time! And as a result, a lot of things that we own never get used to their full potential. It’s kind of that way, with our faith and our relationship with God and his Word. In it can be found the keys to solving most of the world’s problems, but if we don’t read it, then those keys are useless. If we’re ever going to realize the abundant life that’s been promised to us by the one who created us we need to pray for a continual and renewed hunger for God’s Word, rather than just a passing interest whenever we’re faced with some cri- sis or disaster.
