Q: My neighbor’s cat keeps lurking around my bird feeders and killing my birds. What can I do? A: This is a tough one. You can start by asking your neighbor to confine the cat. That probably won’t work. You can start scaring the cat whenever it comes around. Try using a hose and squirting it or even chasing it with a broom. You may need to trim the low growing shrubs to eliminate its hiding places. Q: I have a small hawk dive-bombing my feeder. What can I do? A: Congratulations! You’re a host to a bird many consider the most fascinating feeder visi- tor of all. If it’s crow size, it’s probably a Coo- per’s hawk, and if it’s pigeon size, it’s likely a Sharp-shinned hawk. Sharpies numbers are de- clining and are protected by law. You can’t go out and start shooting. Enjoy them while they are around, and keep their role in perspective. Q: I have finches overrunning my feeders and chasing away other birds, par- ticularly chickadees. What can I do? A: Like it or not, your house finches are here to stay. One thing you can do to give other species a fighting chance. Removing the perches from your tube feeders will discourage camping by finches. There are some thistle feeders with perches above the feeding ports, encouraging gold-finches, which enjoy hanging but house finches don’t. Q: Where do birds go at night? A: Most birds roost (sleep) in the same sort of habitat in which they spend their days. Cavity-nesting birds tend to sleep in roosting holes or nesting boxes. Some water birds roost in their element, however many herons roost in trees. Q: When birds sleep on a wire, why don’t they tip over? A: Bird’s feet have tendons that hold closed and locked in a clinging or gripping po- sition. O’Brien Q: What happens to dead birds? A: I’m always thinking about what hap- pens to dead birds, elephants and even Big Foot. Injured or sick birds seek cover in which to die and are rarely found. Raccoons, opossums and skunks form a cleanup crew. Ants will strip a carcass clean in 24-48 hours. Q: How do I get rid of pigeons with- out harming my jays, and doves? A: Watch what they eat and quit serving it until they stop visiting. This may be a problem with your doves. Don’t put feed on the ground or ledges, or platform feeders. You can use only hanging feeders that sway and feeders too small for the pigeons. Cohort requirements include a one year commitment of monthly trainings and book study that will conclude with taking the CPS test. The training will be held monthly and will vary from ½ day to 4 day train- ing. Only the most dejected and miserable don’t see some hope in the future. There is a saying that goes “hope springs eternal” - the hope that is hope for the future. Over the years as a pastor I have come into contact with people who were in very difficult circumstances – ok, even impossible situations. Many years ago, I knew a lady who was severely stricken with can- cer. She had been given six months to live, and yet she was always faithful at church and trusted the Lord for her future. Not long after her six-month life expectancy had been announced, she came to me and asked me to teach her to play guitar. I was amazed and a little shaken by her request, and I wished I had given her those lessons. She was not preparing for death, she was living her life fully – no matter how much time she was supposed to have. How about you? Are you living your life fully? You can! Listen, if you walk with the Lord Jesus nothing is impossible. May the year 2014 be filled with every good thing that God would have for you.
