Gretchen Gruber, daughter of the inven- tor, will travel from Portland to tell stories about the iconic toy, which also became a useful training tool for medical schools and the U.S. military. The View-Master story began in 1938 when inventor William Gruber, of Portland, met Harold Graves, president of Sawyers, Inc., an Oregon postcard manu- facturing company. They’d just finished a tour of Oregon Caves and began talking about the pair of Kodak Bantam Special cameras that Gruber had rigged together on his tripod. The two cameras simultaneously took photos from two different angles using Kodachrome 16 mm color film, in- vented in 1935. Gruber wanted to develop an update of the stereoscope, a device common in the early 1900s which, when peered through, created three-dimensional images. Gruber and Graves were both staying at the Oregon Caves Chateau and agreed to meet for dinner and talk about the idea. That evening they drew up the prelimi- nary plans for putting Gruber’s idea into production. Oregon Caves National Mon- ument has ever since been recognized as the “birthplace” of the View-Master. In 1939, Gruber and Graves formed a partnership and began producing the viewers and reels. They introduced the View-Master at the New York World’s Fair the same year. The invention enjoyed immediate popularity and over the next 75 years, over 1.5 billion reels were produced in seventeen languages. Between 1942 and the end of World War II in 1945, the U.S. military purchased 100,000 viewers and 600,000 reels to train personnel in range estimation as well as airplane and ship identification. Gruber also collaborated with David L. Bassett, an expert on dissection, to cre- ate a 25-volume atlas of human anatomy using the View-Master system. Beginning with the Model A, 25 dif- ferent viewers were developed using the same internal mechanism and photo reel design, ensuring every reel will work in every model. Reels have been produced for Disneyland, to promote tourism, tele- vision shows and movies. The View-Mas- ter is featured in the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY. It’s estimated that more than 60% of the world’s population recognizes the View-Master name. Industrial designer Charles Harrison led the team which designed the Model F View-Master. He won the Cooper-Hewitt Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 for his outstanding body of work. Harrison visited Oregon Caves National Monument in 2010 for a presentation on the View- Master and other design achievements. The public is cordially invited to the Chateau on Saturday to join in the View- Master celebration and share memories in the place where the View-Master story began its journey around the globe. The “birthday party” is an opportunity to lis- ten to stories from the inventor’s daughter who can tell the story from the perspec- tive of a family member who grew up dur- ing the years when the View-Master was becoming a global sensation.
