ArtWalk wraps up season with success

The final Second Friday ArtWalk for 2013
on August 9 was punctuated by a heavy down-
pour which began around 7:15 p.m. and lasted
over 45 minutes.
Both the Cave Junction Farmers Market
and the rotating Farmers’ Friday Market expe-
rienced lower vendor and patron numbers as a
result of the persistent smoke in the Valley, but
had reached their normal closing time when the
cloudburst struck.
Despite losing the final half hour of the
outdoor silent auction, the Local Illinois Val-
ley Enrichment (LIVE) fund-raiser managed
to garner well over $200 toward the Evergreen
Elementary bioswale project. Most of the items
had been claimed by their new owners in ad-
vance of the scramble to shelter the goods.
The Ford Family Leadership Program Second
Cohort will be planning additional benefits to
complete funding for the project.
Both Diggin’ Livin’ Farm Store and Com-
mune I Tea were open for business, selling
fresh produce, bee products, plants, refashioned
clothes and refreshments during ArtWalk. At
the nearby Ravenswood Gallery, one-man-band
Motel Jones played an assortment of lively
music under the awning, utilizing his own con-
struction of wood and wire connected musical
instruments.
Further north, GetSomes displayed many
new tie-dyed garments in both pastels and
primary colors. Next door, Jennifer Folkerts
offered free treatments at Cave Junction Acu-

landscapes will grace the office for the month.
Shelly Solomon set up a lemonade stand out
front and distributed menus to help promote
her new restaurant “Madd Moose,” located in
Selma across Redwood Highway from the com-
munity center.
Taylor’s Country Store was typically busy
with headliner B. Wishes performing her unique
blend of contemporary music on guitar. Illinois
Valley High School junior and Academic Mas-
ters finalist Hazel Randall displayed
light-hearted mixed media pieces,
sharing the Art Wall space with cur-
rent fire information.
Robert and Cheryl Jones’ three-
business mini-mall encompasses Pet-
als ‘N Thyme flowers, antiques and
gifts, Outdoor Sport ‘N Feed and Eye-
catcher Signs. ArtWalk Featured Art-
ist Gwen Childs demonstrated how to
create creatures from clay and had a
selection of animals and pottery pieces
for sale. Cere Lyda displayed stained
glass lampshades and sun catchers
formed from antique plates as well as
wire-wrapped pendants. At the front
of the building, Billie Coakley offered
samples of a variety of organic foods
available at Cabin Chemistry.
Across the street, Valley new-
comer Faith Peabody’s show of ab-
stract acrylics will brighten the Illinois
Valley News office during August.
Peabody and her paintings were fea-
tured in Reno Magazine when she
lived in Nevada. The newsroom at-
mosphere was festive as guests en-
joyed a variety of finger foods from

year was a great show of community spirit and
pride. Mother Nature put on a display of water
works with a spectacular light show, but that
didn’t dampen our fun!”
