Wednesday, August 7, 2013 Page A-5 Pair of local veterans treated to D.C. trip By Judy Hoyle IVN Contributing Writer Marvin Haynie and Raymond “Rocky” Jones were both treated to an all-expense-paid round trip to Washington, D.C. in June, cour- tesy of “Honor Flight of Oregon.” The program was created by Gail Ya- kopatz of Grants Pass to commemorate World War II veterans and has already sponsored around 600 veterans for 20 flights over the past four years. The Southern Oregon chapter has made 12 trips. The most recent journey included 27 vet- erans accompanied by a relative or friend who acted as a “guardian.” It was made possible with the support of Southwest Airlines, Shilo Inns & Suites and the Coquille Tribal Commu- nity Fund; as well as donations by individuals from around the state. Haynie and Jones carpooled to Portland and were warmly greeted at the airport. “Everywhere we went people lined up to shake our hands … Boy Scouts and police of- ficers,” Haynie said. The group toured the World War II, Ko- rean War and Iwo Jima memorials, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the Lincoln Memorial, the Navy Memorial and Museum and viewed the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Both Haynie and Jones enlisted in the Navy at age 17. Haynie, four years older than Jones, was sent to Guam, became a Yeoman and served on Admiral Nimitz’s staff. He still has a photo taken by a friend of Nimitz accepting the Japanese surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri. Jones was a Navy fireman in California, responsible for aviation and ship fuel. Immedi- ately after the war, he worked on the Pennsyl- vania Turnpike. His family had moved to Kerby during the war and he returned here, marrying Sara Hoskins. He became a “jack of all trades” including stone mason, blacksmith, logger, car- penter, and self-taught architect — designing and building Immanuel Methodist Church, the I.V. Golf Course and several houses. Jones bought Southern Oregon Archery and invented an automatic spine tester, which he sold to Wolverine Manufacturing in Canada. In 1988 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and taught seamanship and navigation for 19 years at the USCG Auxiliary in Brookings and for the Oregon State Marine Board. He was named “Auxiliarist of the Year” in 2003. Together with Sara he became one of the first Master Gardeners in Josephine County and the couple had a produce booth at the Grants Pass Farmers’ Market for years. Haynie worked as general manager of Casey Water Conditioning in Las Vegas before buying the Sears Catalogue Store in Cave Junc- tion and, later, the Redwood Laundromat, which he ran with his wife, Judy, now deceased. Of the 27 veterans on the flight, Haynie and Jones were both chosen to receive Ameri- can flags and accompanying certificates, stating the flags were flown over the U.S. Capitol at the request of Congressman Greg Walden and Hon- or Flight of Oregon to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, De- cember 7, 1941. It was, of course, “a date which will live in infamy,” as declared by President Franklin Roosevelt. All participants received commemorative T-shirts and hats which read: “The Greatest Generation.” Although both men had known each other for years, they were in for one final surprise. Just before the trip they discovered they had both attended Leuzinger High School in Haw- thorne, California. “It really is a small world!” Jones re- marked. The motto of Honor Flight of Oregon is a quote from humorist Will Rogers. “We can’t all be heroes. Illinois Valley Lions Labor Day Festival The Illinois Valley Lions Club Labor Day Festival is fast approach- ing and again will offer an array of activities. The Festival is provided by the I.V. Lions as a means of thank- ing the community for its continued support throughout the year. The Club provides Sight & Hearing, Scholarship Awards, plus hospital/ medical equipment loans for Valley residents. This year’s festival theme is ”PRIDE OF THE ILLINOIS VAL- LEY” and is scheduled for 31 August through 2 September in the Jubilee Park in Cave Junction. The TOUGH TRUCK RACES again will be one of the main features with competition scheduled at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first through third place winners. Also, honored this year are the Helen Keller Award recipients: Mark Camp and Richard Milner. The TALENT SHOW will be a main event during the festival and is open to amateurs of all ages. Juniors will perform on Saturday, Intermedi- ates on Sunday and Adults on Mon- day. Cash prizes will be awarded the winners of each age group.
