Wednesday, July 31, 2013 Page A-3 You th f o o tb al l c am p is a hit By Jenna Larkin IVN Contributing Writer With temperatures reaching sweltering highs, more than 50 area youngster put the heat aside to learn football techniques from our local high school football players and staff July 24-25. While talking to a few young eager players, they revealed some of their favorite drills. “My favorite part of the camp was passing and the gauntlet, an in- tense obstacle course.” said Jasun Hanshaw. “I really liked the gauntlet and the passing drills.” said Tre Fuson Randy Keith and Ray Yarbrough headed the camp this year with plenty of help at hand. Some of those help- ing out included Derek Dunam, offen- sive coordinator for the high school football team; Tony Hess, head coach for the middle school’s seventh- and eighth-grade teams; Scott Thornhill, head coach for the sixth-grade team; and Tom McLanahan, head coach for fourth- and fifth-grade football. Some of the high-school players included C.J. Manning and Skylar McLanhan, quarterbacks; Zak Lindell and James Thompson, running backs; Dakota Fortney and T.J. Hughey, wide receiv- ers; with Kade Doyle and Nick Wor- ley as offensive linemen. Terri Trull, football manager and Will Worley, a former player were also lending a hand during the two-day camp. The camp also had the privilege of hav- ing two guest football players from College of the Siskiyou, Mack Ep- pele and Levi G came and helped on Wednesday. Much of the camp’s success is accredited to Keith and Yarbrough. Between the two coaches there is ap- proximately nineteen years worth of experience coaching football. Keith has also been the Program/Athletic director for the Boys and Girls Club for the I.V. branch for the last five years. “The program has been going strong for four years and has always been free to the kids willing to partici- pate. Each year the program gets a lit- tle bit bigger.” said Keith. “The camp allows the kids to learn and know how fun football can be. As well as learning how to be safe while play- ing. It also allows the youth coaches to shadow the high-school coaches and learn some of the techniques used in the upper divisions.” The football camp has been free to participants due in part to Yarbrough raising funds in the off- season. Along with fund-raising for the youth football camp, Yarbrough also raises funds for 7 on 7 that takes place in Bend and to make the high- school football program free to those who might need a little help with the fees. “I have never seen someone work so hard to fund-raise to make these types of programs free,” Keith said of Yarbrough. Yarbrough is a graduate of IVHS and has been the head coach since 2008. Upon graduating, Yarbrough went on to become an assistant coach for a junior football (ages range from 18 to 22 years) program in Canada. He also helped start a football pro- gram at Okanagan Secondary School in Kelowna, Columbia. “The best thing about coach- ing is being able to help kids and see those kids go through the foot- ball program and come back to help coach up and coming players,” said Yarbrough. “It’s also about being able to give back to the community.” This is the second year that the will pass the Senate. Running a similar program for the youth football allows the coaches to teach the safe- ty and techniques used at the high- school level. Once at the high-school level, the coaches have an easier time instructing the techniques, drills, and plays that are used while still being able to instill safety and fun while playing. The Boys and Girls Club is now taking sign-ups for youth foot- ball. The divisions include: second and third grade flag football, fourth and fifth grade tackle football, and sixth grade football. Applications are available at the Boys and Girls Club located in the cafeteria at Evergreen school. Sign-ups are on a first come first basis and positions are filling up fast.
