Continued from A-5 Since the early 90’s the internet has dramatically changed people’s lives and allowed many to work at home. Other services for health care like naturopathy, massage therapy and acupunc- ture have thrived since 2006, in the old Takilma Clinic building, as a new generation of practitioners is working at the healing center again. Dr. Margaret, a naturopath, set up shop there short- ly after moving to Cedar Gulch from Washington. She is joined by Louisa and Karen who do acupuncture and other healing arts. Other people are self employed and provide the services of ac- countants, tax preparers, nurses, seamstresses, computer techni- cians and handymen, to name a few. One resident, Paula, learned to bake exceptional Danish Selmac ... pastries and makes a good living selling her goodies all around the Valley. Another great baker, Kate D. is a first class chef and bakes scrumptious goodies and caters for large events from her home in Takilma. As if that were not enough she has gone on to become a Librarian and was recently elected to the Three Rivers School Board. The community fortunately has supported a vigorous al- ternative economy of musicians, artists, farmers and craftsmen. This has encouraged new growth in the bridge between Takilma and Cave Junction, in which people are sharing their art and making their town a better and more vibrant place to enjoy. All these substances make their make their way into the water table and drain into the lake, contributing to what many experts call a “toxic cocktail.” Natural plant decomposition processes and fish and animal wastes combine with this toxic cocktail in the lake and the end result is oxygen depletion that favors algae growth, weeds and non-native plants that do well in a high-nutrient low-oxygen environment. Residents in the area also note how there are more and more boats each year, and say that while some are small fishing boats with four-horsepower motors, other large boats have outboard motors at 120 horsepower or more. Sometimes these big engines, like on pontoon boats, idle on the lake half the afternoon, with their exhaust spraying onto the water’s surface. “Motorized boats are supposed to be cleaned and have a five mile-per-hour speed limit,” Carlson said. “But the fuels do contrib- ute to the problem.” Colin Clark, who owns the Lake Selmac Resort and rents boats to the public, uses only electric engines. “I don’t put gas into the lake,” Clark said. “It’d be nice to have only electric, paddle and sailboats out here.” sculpts from local wood, Dave K. blows glass art, Libby weaves with natural yarns, Paco makes buttons, Marjorie sculpts and makes silver jewelry and Delbert makes pole and burl furniture, to name a few. Vendors can choose from a 10- foot by 10-foot space which rents for $125 a month or a 10-foot by 20-foot booth for $250 a month. “The beauty of it for the vendors is that they don’t have to spend time trying to sell their work,” Robert said. “We sell the products for them.” They’re also considering offering booth rentals outside for a flea market in the covered alley between the barn and warehouse. Cham- ber business mixer, concurrently with hosting the Second Friday ArtWalk Featured Artist from 5 to 8 p.m. Cheryl Williams Dolan will exhibit her acrylic landscapes in a show titled “Explore Our World,” and the Sam Soul Trio featuring Motel Jones will play under the awning.
