Charges can be amended or dismissed.) *** Tuesday, April 30 *Because a pit bull was at the back door of the Senior Thrift Store in Cave Junction and barking at customers a complainant wanted it removed. When a deputy arrived he found that the critter’s owner had taken it. *There was a problem with a man who “had run up a large tab” at a CJ coffee stand and who then was refused service until he paid. Since then he has been “making threats and started stalking employees” who are off-duty. He is “known to carry a loaded pistol underneath” the seat of his car. He and his companion were warned about being “trespassed.” *Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (UUMV) was reported in the 200 block of E. River Street. *A man with red hair and green trousers was urinating (color not specified) on the side of a building in the 100 block of Redwood Hwy. A woman with the trespisser told the building owner that she should not have phoned the sheriff’s office and that she “is going to die” for doing it. *Some sort of disturbance with reported menacing occurred in the 7800 block of Deer Creek Road. Stolen property, weapons, trespassing, someone worried about being late to work and other factors were involved. No arrest was noted. *Cari Lee Givevra, 25, was arrested in in Downtown CJ on a charge of UUMV. She was taken to the Josephine County Jail in Grants Pass. *Back-up was requested at 3:15 p.m. by an officer at Redwood Hwy. and Kerby Street in a Priority 1 situation, the details of which were not provided. *Outside Illinois Valley: --Some people on Murphy Creek Road were bothered by incessantly barking coon dogs for two nights. --Some people (same as those above) were bothered by loud music from neighbors who apparently moved their speakers outside. --Along Robertson Bridge Road a man was sleeping on the ground. He was surrounded by beer cans (probably empties). --On Shamrock Lane it appeared that a vacant home had been broken into and that some people camped inside. Nice ... Wednesday, May 1 *Both license plates were reported stolen from a vehicle on N. Old Stage Road. *Restraining Order Violation (ROV) was reported on Lone Mountain Road. The complainant was advised that what was happening didn’t constitute ROV. *From the 11000 block of Caves Hwy. at approximately 12:40 p.m. came a report that a man was assaulted and that another person “may be in trouble.” An ambulance was requested. Someone had a gun. No one was shot, but the victim was pistol-whipped. Medics would not respond until deputies were only 15 minutes away. The situation ended later; medics were canceled; no arrest was noted. *It looked as though a vehicle left in Laurel Cemetery had been in an accident. It was towed. *A resident of Draper Valley Road said that an “old friend” has been phoning him at all hours and that he doesn’t want to hear from her any more. He was advised to obtain a restraining order. *Other than I.V.: --The sound of a crash and a vehicle with a loud muffler speeding away awoke a man on Demaray Drive at 2:45 a.m. Later, he found that his vehicle was severely damaged with repairs anticipated to cost “at least I.V. He added that he is not sure if there is a connection with a neighbor, who is a church lay leader, and who yells that he is praying for him. --In the vicinity of Board Shanty Creek Road there was a confusing situation involving a man who had problems with a woman involving a cat that peed on someone’s couch. And there was concern about some other cats that apparently were threatened with death by a neighbor. --Theft of approximately 30 science fiction DVDs valued at $600 was reported on Turner Drive. --More than $2,000 worth of tools were stolen from two sheds on Upper River Road, stated an upset complainant. (800) 922-1025 Friday, May 3 *Following a traffic accident around 8 a.m. on Deer Creek Road involving a reported stolen tractor, Selma resident Michael Alan Murphy, 22, was cited to appear on a charge of UUMV in lieu of lodging at county jail. The tractor, which was being pulled by a vehicle he was driving, was impounded. OSP handled the incident. *Shop Smart reported a dirty, skinny, red-haired “new guy in town pushing a green shopping cart with all his stuff.” He is described as “very mental” and was “kicked out” of the store three times. The night before this date “he stole beer, crab meat and various items.” There is a request that an officer advise him about criminal trespass. *A woman’s half-brother figured in a situation on Draper Valley Road related to the estate (in probate) of the woman’s father. The daughter is worried that the hafling broke into a garage and that maybe items are missing. *Because a resident was behind on his water bills the city of Cave Junction asked for deputy assistance because the resident parked his car over the water meter so that it couldn’t be turned off for lack of payment. The volunteers and staff of the Illinois Valley Fire District responded to these recent emergency calls: $1,500.” --Additionally, there were several incidents such as motor vehicle crashes, trespassing, drug users causing problems and various goofy types causing other problems around the rural parts of the county outside the Valley. Two weeks ago we received many phone calls from residents asking “Where is all that smoke coming from”? The source of that smoke was prescribed forest management burns conducted by the Bureau of Land Management in the Reeves Creek and Westside Road areas. Many residents may be surprised to know that the IVFD does not have jurisdiction over prescribed burns on government land. Likewise, slash burns from commercial logging are not subject to our jurisdiction. These activities are regulated by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). Removing slash piles by burning is cost- effective and promotes healthy future growth. However, during certain wind conditions, smoke hangs in the valley and is an irritant. The Illinois Valley is not a protected airshed, thus state and local air quality “burn day” restrictions do not apply. This does make it hard for those who are susceptible to asthma or have other breathing by I.V.F.D. Dennis Hoke. difficulties. We recommend that if you are having difficulty with the smoke, stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. If you are having serious breathing difficulty, please call 911 and emergency medical personnel will respond to help you. We are still allowing residential open burning of yard debris until May 31st.--unless weather conditions warrant an early suspension. Burn permits are available at no cost online at our website www. Burn permits have specific conditions intended to minimize the risk of your fire escaping and turning into a wildfire. Remember only yard waste such as limbs, slash, pine needles, etc. can be burned. Trash, plastics, tires or anything that gives off toxic smoke is illegal, and you may face additional charges from the Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ). As we are fast approaching wildfire season, please take precautions to create defensible space around your property. Doing this helps us help you in the event of a wildfire threatening your home. Do you have an evacuation plan? How about your animals? The time to prepare is now, not when the emergency is happening. Make a list of the important things you want to take with you during an evacuation; i.e., important records, money, clothes and pictures. Determine your primary and alternate evacuation routes. Watch for changing conditions and be ready to evacuate on a moment’s notice.
