Softball team loses seven in a row By Tristan Stocker IVN Contributing Writer The Illinois Valley High School softball team played and lost seven games in the past two weeks against Rogue River, Hidden Valley, Lakeview, Ashland and Cascade Christian. The first of the seven games was on the road against Rogue River, a team with a 10-5 record, on Tuesday, April 23. The final score was 2-17. Pitching for the Lady Cougars was Miliya Stewart who, along with Idalis Calvert, makes up the team’s pitching squad. The Lady Cougars had a total of six errors and two hits by Calvert and Shelby Mason. The team’s next game was played by a combination of JV and varsity athletes against Hidden Valley. The final score was 4-22. This game was also pitched by Stewart and the team had five hits and seven errors. Lady Cougars Keynna Augustadt and Jaycee Engles scored points on their hits, while Alexis Inge and Erica Anderson scored on errors. Kim Crow also got a hit. The next two games were against the Lakeview Honkers, whose record is 6-12, in a doubleheader at IVHS on Saturday, April 27. The final scores were 10-23 and 6-29. The first game was pitched by Stewart and the girls had seven hits and three errors. “Usually if they can get on base they do pretty good,” said Darlene Anderson, grandma of Erica Anderson and aunt of Alexis Inge, who says she “feels like the grandma of all of them.” “They run their hearts out. That’s when we score.” Anderson said. In the second game against Lakeview, Idalis started out pitching, but was later relieved by Miliya, who closed out the game. The Lady Cougars had four hits and three errors in the second game, leaving their current record at 0- 16. “The most positive thing about our girls is that even when they lose, they’re always so happy they played,” said Anderson. “People say they never look like they’ve been beaten.” The Lady Cougars then competed against the Ashland Grizzlies, a team with a record of 6-16, on Tuesday, April 30, and lost by a final score of 2-12. The Lady Cougars were able to get two runs on five hits with one error and six left on base to Ashland’s 12 runs on 11 hits with five errors and four left on base. Stewart pitched for the Lady Cougars and Grace Lenthe was on the mound for the Grizzlies. For the Lady Cougars, Abbey Miller scored by reaching base on a walk and Augustadt scored after hitting a single to left field. Then on Friday, May 3, the Lady Cougars met up with the Cascade Christian Challengers, a team with a record of 8-12, at U.S. Cellular Field in Medford for a doubleheader. In the first of the two games, the Challengers shut out the Lady Cougars 25-0. IVHS had no runs, one hit, no errors and four left on base to Cascade’s 25 runs on 13 hits, three errors and five left on base. Pitching for the Cougars was Idalis Calvert, who also got the team’s one and only base hit for the game. In the second game, the Lady Cougars managed to get some points on the board and knock a few into the field. The final score was 3-13. Mason pitched in the second game for two-and-a-half innings, while Augustadt wrapped it. Next up, the Lady Cougars play Rogue River at home on Saturday, May 11, with only one more game to follow at Lakeview. Cougars baseball team drops five games The Illinois Valley High School Cougars’ baseball team moved to 4-17 after five more losses in recent weeks. The Cougars lost to Rogue River (7-11) on Tuesday, April 23, by a final score of 8-3. Then, on Saturday, April 27, they played a doubleheader against Lakeview (11-8) lost both games by final scores of 0-1 and 1-4, respectively. The Cougars played another doubleheader against the Cascade Christian Challengers (17-4) and lost 0-8 and 3-16. “Those were some tough games for us on Friday, although we did show some improvement,” said head coach Javier Aranzubia. The Cougars will play St. Mary’s on Tuesday, May 7, at home. Following that, they take on Rogue River Saturday, May 11, in another doubleheader at home.
