One day we are slogging through rain with a wheel barrow full of madrone, and the next, the ground is drying and it’s time to put the boots away. It’s a rhythm shift. Not only do we spring ahead, but our biological clocks are forced to reset as well. Exchanging an hour of sun in the morning for one at the end of the day is an adjustment, but one that has always seemed worth any temporary sleep or time disturbance. There are still cold days, cold nights and more rain to come, but on the eve of daylight-saving time, I can’t help but feel happy. It conjures up images of summer, of school Kim, I think we should change being out, and running barefoot our name to on the streets and sidewalks of McAnally’s for St. the old neighborhood. Sometimes on those evenings we would be sent to bed while the gray of dusk I stood on a hilltop over the weekend, south of Grants Pass, east of the college. It was so quiet that the birdsong breaking the silence was as startling as if a small plane had materialized low over the trees. I looked up to see a tan and white bird, its tail spanned by a black stripe, gliding over the pines, against a cloudless blue sky. It was the kind of moment unique to southern Oregon, on a March afternoon. It was the day before daylight-saving time was to kick in, and as I watched this flier looping an ever-widening circle, casually expanding his still lingered, needling each other from top to bottom bunk or from across the hallway, still in play mode. Our Mom defended years later, “It was the only chance I had to rest.” Whether it’s fond childhood memories, the anticipation of being outside more, or just the thought of long summer days, it’s time to open the windows and feel air going through the house, hear the wind chimes on the deck, and see the tops of pines sway as Spring washes in from the west. As I looked upward again, the bird had grown more distant. A smaller species that had been calling from the cover of a nearby tree shot up and into the larger one’s circle, and then both were gone. I looked at the sky a moment and thought of the change coming. Overnight it would become more summer than winter, more light than dark, more soaring than stagnant. Though it was too far away to know for sure, I suspect I had been watching a hawk flying circles in the sun, while below we emerge from winter.
