Big deal — on Thursday and Friday, May 26 and 27, sixth grade science classes explored the Siskiyou Field Institute (SFI) in Selma and the Oregon Caves National Monument to learn about watersheds and water quality in their own backyard. Lorna Byrne Middle School students from Tim Talty and Mary Trammel’s science classes split days, one group going first to the Caves and then to the SFI and vice-versa, as part of their curriculum. According to Talty, students have been studying ways to measure water quality in class and were able to test out theories in local environments. “It’s not so much an end-of-year trip as a way of integrating the local access to environmental locations and learning about watersheds, water quality, and looking at Edsen Donato, DPTSc, PT, OCS, CHT, CSCS Jeff Wood, MS, PT Joint Replacement Andrew Roberts, DPT Back & Neck Injury Jim McCall, PTA Sports Injury Austin Nickerson, PTA Certified Hand Therapist Three Convenient Locations Cave Junction (541) 592-6580 218 N Redwood Hwy. This trip was looking at how nature deals with water.” Despite on and off rain and colder than normal temperatures, Talty said students toughed it out and enjoyed themselves, asking one question after another to staff working at the Monument and the SFI. Talty hopes the field trips will become a consistent part of the end- of-year science studies at Lorna Byrne in the future. “It’s just a great way to get kids out of the classroom locally,” he said. “When money’s tight putting together a field trip is difficult. It’s a great way to use local resources. I think a lot of students don’t look at their environment where they live the same way as when they’re doing [field trips].” Barking loudly, this pup was not happy about waiting for his coffee Monday May 30. At Caves Creek near the Monument and on SFI grounds, students collected samples and measured the pH and temperature of water, learning firsthand about factors that can affect the health of Southern Oregon watersheds. Before the trip, guest speakers from the SFI and the water treatment plant in Cave Junction outlined some concepts in the classroom. In April, Talty said SFI staff headed a workshop in Lorna Byrne Middle School science classes, preparing students on some of the material they would later apply hands-on in field trips. “This is part of a unit we’re doing on ecology and the role of water in…what they call the Siskiyou Klamath eco region,” Talty said. “We actually invited Mike Bollweg — who runs the sewage treatment plant and the water treatment here in town — to Send Your Classified Ad to zbooth@illinois-valley-news.com 145 S.
