High -- 74 Low -- 46 Evergreen assembly rewards behavior By Darcy Wallace IVN Staff Writer The symbol of our country was spotted at Evergreen Elementary Thursday, May 19. In other words, a bald eagle, one of many animals Wildlife Images in Grants Pass brought to Evergreen as the main attraction in the year’s final Positive Behavioral Interventionist supports (PBIS) assembly. Most students are probably used to cats, dogs and even livestock. They might not be so accustomed to the badger, ferret, bald eagle and great horned owl they saw in the Evergreen gym Thursday. Each month during the school year, the school rewards students with excellent behavior and attendance by prize drawings and an entertaining activity to help give them incentive and reinforcement to continue the positive behavior. In a grand follow-up to last month’s Trashion Show, Evergreen students got to see several animals up close that normally live in the wild, but due to living too long in human environments or because of an inability to survive in the wild, the animals live at Wildlife Images. “Two years ago for [Kerbyville Museum] Heritage Day, Wildlife Images was scheduled to give their presentation,” said museum board vice president Lloydeen Davis. “We re-scheduled it for this year at Evergreen so the whole school could participate instead of just the fourth-graders.” Kerbyville Museum director Dennis Strayer spoke at the assembly of how Evergreen fourth grade classes took a field trip to the museum for the annual Heritage Day event. He identified Davis for her continued support of the museum and its programs. Strayer also thanked Evergreen principal Dave Valenzuela and identified fourth-grade instructors who chaperoned the classes for the field trip. “We couldn’t do this program without the support of the teachers and principal,” Strayer said. “I want to thank all the teachers, who do a great job.” Before the Wildlife Images display, teachers put together a slideshow of the many students from the playground to classroom activities summing up the 2010-2011 school year. Several students won prizes from a drawing, including tickets to the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus that premiered in Cave Junction Monday, May 23. Another highlight for many students was the photo slide show of PBIS students of all grade levels, working hard in classroom activities or having fun with friends on the playground. According to I.V. Chamber office manager Dulcie Moore, the mixer brings different businesses to one location once a year. On Friday, a fire blazing in the fireplace and appetizers helped create the atmosphere for the event. Moore said about 50 people showed up for networking and sharing ideas between business owners and individuals from both sides of Hayes Hill. “Communicating; that’s what it’s about,” Moore said. “We get to interact with Grants Pass so we’re on a more first-name basis. This helps us get acquainted so they know [the Illinois Valley] is a serious community.
