According to education assistant Charlotte Baker, 84 Vikings were recognized in the Junior Honors Society ceremony welcoming new inductees and congratulating continuing members. To enter the Junior Honors Society, Baker said students need at least a 3.5 gpa for two consecutive terms and 15 hours of unpaid community service, which can include volunteering at events or helping a family member, neighbor or other community member with a task. Once in, they must maintain at least a 3.0 gpa. NJHS members also need good attendance and classroom behavior, showing leadership and a good example among their peers. “Attendance and behavior need to be there,” Baker said. “[They] have to be leaders in their school.” After the ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner, Emily Brick volunteered to sing a solo in front of all students and parents present, filling in for band director Brice Cloyd’s marimba band, which was unable to attend. ERC and education assistant Vicki Shump introduced Illinois Valley High School sophomore Miranda Stiles, who presented the keynote speech. Stiles was a three-year NJHS member in middle school and is now in National Honors Society at IVHS and sophomore class president. Stiles told of how she enrolled in tougher classes and made herself spend extra time studying, deciding the extra work was worth it in the success she would gain later in life. She encouraged current and new NJHS students to work hard in whatever they strive for, be it college, a dream job or other pursuits. “For some of you, college seems forever away,” Stiles said. “But in reality, the things you do now will set the [tone] for the future… keep up this positive, hardworking, dynamic attitude and you will do wonders in life.” Next in the ceremony, five students won an award for their excellence in one of five categories: Chawna Crawford in Scholarship, Alicia Warner in Service, Kiana Stiles in Leadership, Vonn Hennings in Character and Melissa Myers in Citizenship. Later, new Junior Honors inductees walked down the aisle led by a current NJHS member, shaking science teacher Tim Talty’s hand. Faith Kitchens then read the Honors Society pledge to new members, who were sworn in to the NJHS ranks. In an unexpected move, Baker announced she will retire at the end of the school year after 17 years in the Three Rivers School District.
