They don’t correlate that the animal standing out in the field is the same thing that puts milk on our tables. We try to bring that to light.” Volunteers from OSU Extension Service with the Agriculture in the Classroom foundation spoke of how varying climates in the state, from drier Eastern Oregon to the rainier Western areas, result in a wide range of products. Along with learning about the transition from straight off the farm, to production, to the store, volunteers helped students learn and get excited about healthy foods, showing them what “Over the last seven years I’ve been doing this I’ve heard kids make the comment, ‘I thought milk came from Safeway,’ ” Three Rivers School District food service director Michael Morris The Farm to Market event is passing through various Southern Oregon schools this week to expose other students to where their food comes from, emphasizing local produce. According to Three Rivers School District food service director Michael Morris, students growing up in rural areas don’t always know about what’s available in their back yard. “Not every kid gets exposed to many types of food,” Morris said, adding that some still haven’t seen farm animals up close. “I was a city kid — I didn’t see my first chicken until I was 20,” Morris said. Students were especially attracted to the center demonstration in the Evergreen gym, where they could interact with dogs, a cow and even a rabbit resting on FFA volunteer coordinator Amy Meyer’s lap. “Over the last seven years I’ve been doing this I’ve heard kids make the comment, ‘I thought milk came from Safeway,’ ” Morris balanced meals look like and showing students a range of fruits and vegetables, from lemons and oranges to oddly-shaped ginger root. The 2011 Oregon Dairy Princess Jessica Budge also traveled all the way from Sherwood to discuss the dairy side of farming, from milk to ice cream. For lunch, Morris said students would choose from the “A to Z” buffet, including a food from every letter of the alphabet. Staff and volunteers were encouraging students to try different things, exposing them to the variety of fresh foods coming from local farms. “I think we opened up their eyes on the nutrition factor with the whole program,” Morris said. “Every year [Farm to Market] is a little different depending on what we get for produce. But we look for exotic things, not food everybody can see on the dinner table every night.” (Photo by Darcy Wallace, Illinois Valley News) A live sheep is just one of the animals Evergreen Elementary students interacted with Monday, April 11 during Farm to Market Day. Illinois Valley High School FFA members also helped out during the event.
