For several years, the Rogue Valley Har- monizers, a male choral group, visited fourth- grade students around Josephine County to get them inspired about music. According to chorus member Ivan Cer- mak of Selma, the group launched the “Get America Singing Again” program where mem- bers helped students learn ten songs. Later on, JoCo fourth-graders took the bus to a Grants Pass theater for a finale. “[There were] 400 kids in the seats, sing- ing to our chorus on the stage and the chorus singing to the kids,” Cermak said. “It was popu- lar with the schools.” This year, that program was put on hold due to budget constraints. But Cermak said he called Evergreen principal Dave Valenzuela and offered to do a similar program for local fourth-graders. On Tuesday, March 8, four singers calling themselves the Lytning Quartet sang to Ever- green students. The students had already been practicing a few songs of their own, such as Low-income students in Southern Oregon have another option to help them save money for college. The news release says the planning process aims to im- prove cooperation and communication within the community. It includes representatives from city governments, local utility providers, the Interagency Fire Board and public opinion. Grants Pass and Cave Junction are reportedly working on city-specific parts of the plan. The county can retain eligibility to apply for federal funding for natural hazard mitigation projects In May, the NHMP draft will reportedly be available for comments. Quartet members Mark Larsen, Bob Mei- sner, Allen Crocker and Herb Ottesen demon- strated some of their repertoire with students listening and sometimes singing along. Lytning sang a different version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” challenging the stu- dents to find out what was ‘wrong’ about the song. The final song in Tuesday’s class was “Rogue River Valley” from the 1946 film “Can- yon Passage.” Ottesen, whom Cermak said is 91 years old, sang the soprano lines and could hold a high note for nearly 30 seconds. “I’ve been singing practically all my life,” Ottesen said. All four members of the quartet said their main purpose wasn’t just to get students inter- ested in barbershop alone. Any type of singing or playing instruments, they said, was benefi- cial. Cermak added that Cave Junction resident Denny Hare also helps teach the Evergreen stu- dents, but was out of town this week.
