Wednesday, July 29, 2009 New Miss Josephine County seeks community support By SCOTT JORGENSEN IVN Staff Writer Even though Rachel Marie Hoglen was crowned Miss Josephine County fairly recently, the 25-year-old is already making plans to rep- resent the community at the state and national levels. Hoglen, a lifelong Grants Pass resident, has been mod- eling since she was 19. But the pageant experience is still new to her. The 2002 Grants Pass High School graduate hopes to participate in the Miss Ore- gon USA Pageant slated for Nov. 27 through 29 in Port- land. It will be a competition involving women from cities and counties throughout the state. As such, Hoglen must raise $3,000 to participate in the pageant. She needs $1,000 by September to cover registration fees and other related expenses. “Basically, I’m reaching out to the community right now,” Hoglen said. “Anything helps.” She said that she is plan- ning a series of fund-raising events, including bake sales, a yard sale and a possible car wash. Those kinds of com- munity events are nothing new for Hoglen, who tends to be rather active. This year, she served as a team captain for the annual Relay for Life, which raises money to fight cancer. Hoglen also has participated in past American Heart Asso- ciation walks and helped with the Frog O’Faire in Grants Pass, and the Illinois Valley Child’s Fair and Pet Parade. Health is a big issue for Hoglen, who works as a com- munity liaison in marketing and community health educa- tion for Siskiyou Community Health Center. She is a certi- fied medical assistant, li- censed Pilate instructor, and also holds a certification in body mechanics training. “I like the health field,” she said. Hoglen’s goal is to repre- sent Oregon at Miss USA 2010, which will be a nation- ally televised event via NBC. She’s getting plenty of prac- tice in the meantime, as she participated in Miss Hawaiian Tropic International at a re- sort in Washington in early July. Aside from that, Hoglen is one of four Oregon women accepted to be a Patriot Girl. They host functions and par- ticipate in other events to raise money for services for U.S. military veterans. Hoglen said she ulti- mately would like to continue her education by studying for Gary Jack Gary A. Mr. Jack was born on June 3, 1956 in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada to Alexan- der & Helen Jack. He grew up in Vancouver, B.C. and gradu- ated from high school there in 1973. On Oct. 19, 1981 in Vancouver he married Kath- leen Close. In 1996 he moved to Cave Junction. For 35 years, Mr. Jack was a professional driver. He also enjoyed working as a me- chanic. Survivors include his wife Kathleen Jack, of Kerby; a daughter, Roshel; four sons, Adam, Samuel, Christopher and Elijah; a sister, Linda; two brothers, Norm and Eddie; and one grandchild. six grandchildren. JOE NATHERN CRUTCHFIELD, 50, of Cave Junc- tion, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at his home, surrounded by loved ones. In lieu of flowers send outdoor plants or a contribution to your favorite charity. Joe was born on September 9, 1958 in Stockton, Calif. to Everett (Junior) & Jonnie Crutchfield. Served in the U.S. Army 1976-1979. On December 4, 1982 he married his High School Sweetheart, Kristi Ann Miller. Loved ones include three sons, Dustin (Sara Couick), Adam, and Aaron Crutchfield of Cave Junc- tion, Ore.; two brothers, Carl Crutchfield (Diane) of Stockton, Calif., Harold Crutchfield (Kathy) of Lodi, Calif.; one sister, Debi Doyle (Chip) of Selma, Ore.; In-laws Jim & Ellen Hamilton of Stockton, Calif., Scott Miller of Los Angeles, Calif., and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great- nephews, and so many loving friends. Joe was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend. He enjoyed barbecues, deep-sea fishing, golf- ing, cooking, camping with his sons, spending time with his family, and peaceful surroundings. He worked hard and took pride in his business, Crutch- field’s. He’s a member of the Operating Engineers Union and Illinois Valley Lions Club. Joe had the Biggest Heart and an endless sense of humor. Seventh-day Adventist Church, Cave Junction Two weeks of Vacation Bible School are being enjoyed with enthusiastic children ages 5 to 13. The staff have been meeting with Pastor Verne Hyland each morning for wor- ship at 8:30; then rushing to their rooms to meet classes. It is a busy program with always-exciting opening exer- cises. They include praise mu- sic, a continued story from Missionary Pastor Hyland, a colorful skit depicting a Bible story on the Life of Jesus acted out by the children and some staff members. The children enjoy the recreation time conducted with zeal by two young adults. The closing program and graduation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 and close with a delicious lunch in the fellowship hall. The chil- dren may pick up their boxes of completed crafts at that time. Pastor Hyland’s message on Seize the Moment was a blessing to all as he encouraged us to keep going forward with outreach in the community. During June, more than 400 were helped through the Community Service Dorcas Program on Tuesdays as large boxes of food were distributed as well as summer clothing. Each Tuesday the Community Service Bldg. at 265 S. Old Stage Road is open to the pub- lic from 9 a.m. to noon for clothing, and 1 to 3 p.m. for food boxes. The Madrone Adventist Elementary School is accepting students in kindergarten through eighth grade for the 2009/2010 school year. There are some openings for new students. Contact Head Teacher Amy Whitchurch, at 592-3330 or 592-6604 for in- formation concerning this spe- cial, highly accredited school. Each Saturday the church doors are open at 8:30 a.m. for special prayer. At 9:20 the praise music starts and Bible study time begins at 9:30. At 10:40 praise music again and at 11 the Sabbath Worship Ser- vice is held. Anyone can attend, and the service always is followed by a fellowship buffet. Tuesdays at 7 p.m. an interesting Prayer & Praise meeting is held, offering mid- week blessings. Wednesdays at 2 p.m. an exciting Bible Study program is held. A free Bible is given each person wanting one, and there are free lessons. Pastor Hyland tells us about Psalm 121:1, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills, From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” Jack & Jean Sequiera, pastor/evangelists, authors and talented speakers, will spend a week in Illinois Valley pro- claiming the Gospel of a soon- coming Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They will speak on Sunday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 15 at the church. Each evening at 7 p.m. there will be music and the spoken word. The community can attend any of the meetings. Charles Fuhrman Charles Fuhrman, 64, of Cave Junction, died Saturday, July 18, 2009 at his home. Arrangements are pending with Illinois Valley Funeral Directors. Marvin Sprinkle Marvin Del “Doc” Sprin- kle, 75, of Cave Junction, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Three Rivers Community Hos- pital in Grants Pass. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 25. Condo- lences can be sent to the family at rtsprinkle@mindspring.com. Mr. Sprinkle was born to Ada Dorin Sprinkle on July 20, 1933 in Albia, Iowa. He left Albia to join the U.S. Air Force on May 14, 1951 and served in the Korean War during 1952 and ’53. He married Beverly Jean (Heffner) Sprinkle in 1953, and moved to Westmin- ster, Calif., where they had two children, JoLyn and Ron. In 1965 the Sprinkle Fam- ily moved to Oregon, where “Doc” worked with the Bell Telephone Co. In 1973, his wife, and daughter, JoLyn, died. On March 13, 1976 he married Shirley Irene (Duling) Sprinkle, who survives him. He retired from Pacific North- west Bell in 1992 after 38 years within the Bell companies. He enjoyed the outdoors, growing roses, collecting elec- tronic gadgets, traveling, mo- torcycles and John Wayne movies. A graveside service was held July 27, 2009 at the Pio- neer Masonic Cemetery, with the Kerby Belt Lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons conducting. Chapel of the Valley – L.B. Hall Funeral Home was in charge of ar- rangements. Mr. Morris was born Feb. 6, 1920 in Jackson County, Ala. At 18, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1938 until 1948. He was a chief boatswain’s mate at the time of his discharge. While in the Navy, he served aboard the transport USS Henderson, the submarine tender USS Canopus and the heavy cruiser USS Augusta under Admiral Hart. He was on board when the USS Augusta transported President Franklin Roosevelt to a conference with Winston Churchill. He also had tempo- rary duty on the transport USS Samuel Chase. While on shore leave in San Francisco in 1940, he met Saxon May Schulz, whom he married on Sept. 12, 1941. She died March 28, 2005. The couple lived in San Lorenzo, Calif. And upon his discharge from the Navy, he went to work for Safeway stores. It was his dream to own his own market that brought him to Cave Junction. In May 1972, he opened Jim’s Sentry Market, which he and Saxon operated until their retirement in February 1979. Mr. Mason was a member of the Kerby Belt Lodge. He and his wife assisted with the furnishing and decorating of the Illinois Valley Senior Cen- ter. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling with Saxon. Survivors include four brothers and two sisters.
