CAVES COMMEMORATION - Sunday, July 12, will mark the centennial of Oregon Caves National Monument. The National Park Service invites the community to join the celebration. Commemorative festivities will kick off on Sat- urday, July 11 with an ice cream social at 1 p.m. Ice cream will be served by Oregon First Lady Mary Oberst and her family. Attendees can view a newly renovated model room in the Oregon Caves Chateau, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. This model room is part of a multimillion dollar restoration and renovation of the property, slated to begin in 2012. Historic photos taken during the construction of the Chateau in the early 1930s will also be displayed. On Sunday, July 12 at noon there will be festive sing- ing and anniversary cake. Special programs will be offered throughout the day. Joan Momsen of the Josephine County Historical Society will tell stories about her reign as an Oregon Caves’ queen. Park Ranger Tom Siewert will portray Elijah Davidson, the first-known explorer of Oregon Caves. Meet community partners and organizations fea- tured at educational and informational tables, including Illi- nois Valley Fire District, Siskiyou Field Institute, Illinois Val- ley Arts Council, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and other area groups. LOVEJOY HEARTY EVENT - Lovejoy Hospice’s sec- ond annual Heart of Summer Gala will include wine-and- chocolate tasting, music and a fun-filled live auction on Sat- urday, July 11 at the Bear Hotel, 2101 Spalding Ave. in Grants Pass starting at 5:30 p.m. Oregon Little Big Band will play, and the caterer will be Aroma Café. The event will be highlighted by a live auction featuring unique items and services, including spending a day with a custom motorcy- cle builder, a hot air balloon ride with lunch for two, and a personal flying lesson. RVF members will fly a wide variety of aircraft throughout the morning. Ad- ditionally, the club will pro- vide opportunities to fly an R-C aircraft for all interested. A flight instructor will connect with the student by a “buddy box” to ensure a safe and en- joyable flight. The RVF Float Fly has been a popular event at Lake Selmac for more than 20 years. The public can bring Layout plan update meeting for I.V. Airport set July 14 The second of four pub- lic meetings regarding the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) update process for Illinois Valley Airport will be held on Tuesday, July 14. The public gathering at the site across from Rough & Ready Lumber Co., will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the former mess hall at the air- port, 30904 Redwood Hwy. The intent is to update the 2001 Illinois Valley ALP and Narrative Report. “This document is more than 7 years old and needs to be updated to reflect new facilities, current projections of airport activity, new envi- ronmental and other regula- tory constraints,” said Alex Grossi, Josephine County airports manager. Planning for the long- term financial health of the airport and the appropriate mix of land uses to support projected aviation and non- aviation needs are also con- siderations, Grossi said. According to Grossi, this update and report project will provide the airport with re- vised ALP drawings and a Capital Improvement Pro- gram (CIP) to provide the airport with a method and proposed schedule for cor- recting identified airport de- sign deficiencies. It is the intent of this study, he noted, to update existing drawings and provide a review of existing and long- range needs of the airport. Specific items that will be addressed within the narrative report include a review of the historic buildings at the air- port and how they may affect future development, along with a detailed discussion of the appropriate Airport Refer- ence Code (ARC). It dictates the Federal Aviation Admini- stration’s design and safety standards for the airport. The public meeting will address the aeronautical ac- tivity forecast for the airport for the next 20 years; and the ARC and the facility require- ments to accommodate the forecasted operations will be discussed. Additionally, there will be presentation and discus- sion of the proposed perime- ter fence project and possible effects on users and tenants.
