Wednesday, July 1, 2009 Volunteers aid Josephine County sheriff’s deputies as ‘eyes and ears’ By SCOTT JORGENSEN IVN Staff Writer Boosting efforts of Jose- phine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) in Illinois Valley, two trained volunteers are as- signed to patrol in a black- and-white cruiser without overhead lights By doing so, Linda Ted- der and her partner Jeannette Rogers free sworn, armed deputies for other duties. The pair regularly checks vacant, foreclosed homes and has a steady presence at Lake Selmac, Cave Junction’s Ju- bilee Park and the River Val- ley Village Senior Park. Other groups of volunteers have been assigned to the Merlin and Murphy areas. Tedder and Rogers also conduct vacation home checks and frequently drive by areas that have Neighbor- hood Watch programs. A former Cave Junction resident, Tedder began her volunteer patrols in April. Rogers is a retired Southern California police officer, and the two say they’ve gotten a very positive reaction from the community. “We find elderly people appreciate us,” Tedder said. In fact, Tedder said that she and Rogers have been receiving tips about suspected drug activities and forwarding that information to deputies. The pair has yet to en- counter any highly strange or dangerous situations while on patrol. Tedder said that is likely because they only go out during the day. “There are some crazy people at night,” she said. When conducting vacant home checks, the volunteers have a list of around 60 resi- dences. They do a perimeter check to make sure the houses have no signs of forced entry. Typically, one of the women walks around the property while the other stays in the car to monitor JCSO radio traffic. Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said that JCSO now has more than 50 volunteers, which enables his organization to better serve county residents. “They’re the eyes and ears out there for us,” Gilbertson said. “They do all kinds of tasks.” Gilbertson said that he is working on ways to better utilize the volunteers, includ- ing training them to take re- ports. Stohlman, 85, of Cave Junction, who died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at home. In lieu of flowers, remem- brances can be made to Laureate Beta Beta IVHS Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 588, Cave Junction OR 97523. Mrs. Stohlman was born Dorothy Carroll Mashburn on Aug. 26, 1923 in Los Angeles to Lloyd A. Mashburn & Emma Luella Mashburn. On Nov. 7, 1943 in Los Angeles she mar- ried Arnold G. Stohlman. She worked as a book- keeper for the Iron Workers Local in Los Angeles for 30 years. In 1976 she moved from Garden Grove, Calif. to Cave Junction. Mrs. Stohlman was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority; Illinois Valley Medi- cal Center, where she served as a board member; Retired Sen- ior Volunteer Program; and Illinois Valley Senior Center. From 1987 to 2004 she volunteered in a first-grade class at Evergreen Elementary School in Cave Junction help- ing children learn to read. She also was active in other aspects of the community. She was a loving wife, mother and grand- mother. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading. Besides her husband, Arnold G. Stohlman, of Cave Junction; survivors are two sons, Stephen A. Stohlman, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Douglas L. Stohlman, of Cave Junction; a daughter, Marcia Stohlman- Wellen, of Tustin, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Belter, of Palm- dale, Calif.; and seven grand- children. She was preceded in death by her parents and two broth- ers, Richard Mashburn and Louis Mashburn. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of ar- rangements. of the Valley-L.B. Most of these groups and others performed at a fund- raising concert Saturday and Sunday, June 20 and 21 at the Historic Ashland Armory, rais- ing some $25,000. Proceeds will go toward more than $20,000 in medical bills and for support of the family, which has children in high school and college, said Larry Marshall of Marshall Fundrais- ing Management, which did pro bono work. Said Lynn Sjolund, direc- tor of Rogue Valley Chorale which sang at the benefit, “Dave did a lot of wonderful things for a lot of people in this valley.” Surviving are Tami Mar- ston, his wife of 20 years; and their children, Sarah and Rose. Berg A Celebration of Life was held at the family home Thurs- day, June 25, for Selma resi- dent Richard Andrew Berg, 74, who died June 21, 2009 at Three Rivers Community Hos- pital in Grants Pass. A funeral service with military honors was held Mon- day, June 29 at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, Calif. Mr. Berg was born on May 21, 1935 in Jamaica, N.Y. to Henry & Virginia (McGandless) Berg. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two and half years, and was awarded the National Defense Medal. On Oct. 16, 1955 in Kingman, Ariz. he married the former Beverly Ann McLeod, who survives. In 1975 the couple moved to Selma from Livermore, Calif. His interests included coin collecting, and he was an enthusiastic sports fan. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard Berg Jr., of Riverside, Calif., and Bo Berg, of Selma; two daughters, Vicki Henry, of Selma, and Robin Buffington, of Bakersfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Christine Berg and Virginia Berg. Arrangements for Mr. Berg were directed by Chapel Rosane E. Dave Marston (By Medford Mail Tribune) Barely 24 hours after a two-day benefit concert raised more than $25,000 for his medical bills and the support of his family, well-known Rogue Valley musical director and chorale leader Dave Marston, 56, died in Ashland of a rare brain disease. Afflicted the past four months with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Mr. Marston died in home hospice care Monday, June 22. A fixture on the Rogue Valley music scene for dec- ades, he led his family in many performances, including his last, Gems of Broadway, in early May at Southern Oregon University at Ashland. During his long musical career, the energetic Mr. Mar- ston was music director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and led the Siskiyou Singers; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church There is a story in Mark about a young woman who had hemor- rhages for 12 years. Nothing she or her doctors did made the condi- tion better. She had such faith about Jesus healing her that she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” And that’s what hap- pened. Jesus told her that her faith had made her well, and he told her to go in peace, fully healed. Such faith may seem incredible to us, but Jesus is near enough for us to reach out. We may not feel the touch in a physical sense, but he is there. Driver instruction class signup deadline July 1 Rogue Community Col- lege is offering a High School Driver Training course at Illi- nois Valley High School. Classroom sessions will be held July 13 to 30, Mon- days through Thursdays, from 8:45 to 11:30 a.m. They will take place during the IVHS regularly scheduled summer school hours so that students will be able to take a bus to and from school. An additional 12 hours of on-the-road driving instruction that does not coincide with the classroom schedule will be arranged between the instruc- tor and students. This course is available for a discounted tuition rate of $229 for current high school or GED students under the age of 18 who have a learner’s permit, but do not yet have a driver’s license. Students must receive their learner’s permit before the start of class. The course meets Oregon requirements for high school driver education and may al- low for discounts on student auto insurance. This course is being brought to IVHS through the school’s 21st Century Grant Program. Students who suc- cessfully complete the pro- gram will receive a $100 re- fund on their course tuition. Financial aid and payment plans are available to families who qualify. RCC also is offering a free one-hour class for parents and guardians on July 13 from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. Partnering with Parents and Guardians for Safe Driving will review high school driver training instruction methods and new driving concepts.
