Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Page 8 Legislature to receive health plan Charles William ‘Chuck’ Jacobs Charles William “Chuck” Jacobs, 77, of Selma, who was an artist, musician and master craftsman, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. A celebration of his life was held Friday, Aug. 24 at the family home in Selma. The family guestbook can be signed, and condolences can be offered by visiting www.stephensfc.com. Ar- rangements were by Stephens Family Chapel. “Chuck” was born on March 15, 1930, in Modesto, Calif. to Charles Henry Jacobs and Olive Ruth (Overstreet) Jacobs. He served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He graduated from Life Bible Col- lege in Los Angeles in 1959, and received a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1962. In 1971 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Azusa Pacific University, and in1972 he completed his Mas- ter of Arts degree. He taught marriage and family relations at Citrus College in Glendora, Calif., and worked as an eligi- bility worker for the Dept. of Public Social Services in Co- vina, Calif. It was there that he met his wife, Betsey. After retirement, their love of Nature drew them from Claremont, Calif. to Selma, where they had lived happily since 1992. Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Grants Pass, and an active member of the community. His family agrees that many were inspired by his passion for ad- venture and love of the arts. He leaves behind his wife, Betsey Ross Jacobs, of Selma; his four children, Lynell Miller, of Federal Way, Wash., Cynthia Englebright, of Novato, Calif., Gary Jacobs, of La Mesa, Calif., and Jeanette Jacobs, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three step-children, Peggy Jackson, of Selma, Bill Good Shepherd Lutheran Church We are told in the Bible to keep the Sabbath holy. Whether Christians celebrate it on Saturday or Sunday, they do so to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, and to devote special time to hearing and studying the word of God. If we use the Sabbath the way God intends, we are prom- ised his presence daily. Michael Cady ‘Herky’ Cotton Michael Cady “Herky” Cotton, 47, of Cave Junction, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. A private service was held with Hull & Hull Funeral Di- rectors in charge of arrange- ments. Condolences can be made to the Cotton Family at since1928hull.com. “Herky” was born on Feb. 14, 1960 in Eureka, Calif. to Frederick Healy Cotton and Jacqueline Darlene Cotton. He attended the Oregon State School for the Deaf in Salem and later transferred to public schools in Murphy. He at- tended Lincoln Savage Middle School and Hidden Valley High School, where he partici- pated in wrestling and football. His family said that he had a big heart and always wanted to help people. Surviving are a sister, Alisyn Carson, of Sparks, Nev.; two brothers, Jacque Cotton, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Andre Cotton, of Grants Pass; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves be- hind a devoted friend, Cherie Duran, of Cave Junction, and her family. He was preceded in death by his father in 2005, and his mother in 2003. Nate Barker Nate Barker, 20, of Grants Pass, a former Selma resident and current member of the Army National Guard, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 as the result of an automobile acci- dent in Kuna, Idaho. Remembrances can be made to the Army National Guard, Family Support, c/o Grants Pass Armory. He was born Nathaniel Wayne Barker on July 4, 1987 in Arcata, Calif. In 1992 he moved from Eureka, Calif. to Grants Pass, where he attended North Valley High School for his freshman year and part of his sophomore year. In 2002 as a sophomore he moved to Selma and attended Illinois Valley High School until graduating in 2005. During 2004 during his junior year in high school he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, in which he served in the 186 th Infantry, 41 st Battal- ion Delta Company, of Grants Pass. He served active duty in Afghanistan and received eight awards and medals: the Na- tional Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Ser- vice Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Rib- bon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, NATO Medal, and the Army Com- mendation Medal. Nate was still currently enlisted in the National Guard. His hobbies included dirt bik- ing, “Jeeping,” camping, and snowboarding. Survivors are his wife, Jessica Marie Lavassaur, of Grants Pass; his mother, Jes- sica Couris Cotta, of Selma; his stepfather, Manuel N. Cotta, of Selma; three brothers, Paul Couris, Brandon Cotta, and Padraic Cotta; and his grand- parents, Manuel & Faith Cotta, Merrlyn Barker, and Dean & Joan Couris. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Barker; and his brother, Aaron Couris. The Healthy Oregon Act (Senate Bill 329) estab- lishes the Oregon Health Fund Board, which is to help develop a comprehen- sive plan to reform Ore- gon’s health-care system and “move toward provid- ing affordable health insur- ance for every Oregonian.” Gov. Kulongoski has signed the legislation. The board will deliver its plans to the Legislature for the February 2008 and January 2009 sessions. Bob Clark Former Selma resident Bob Clark, 66, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at Hull & Hull Chapel in Grants Pass with Chaplain Frank Barrows conducting. Interment will follow at Gran- ite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass. Hull & Hull Funeral Di- rectors is in charge of arrange- ments. Remembrances may be made to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, 601 N.W. Fifth St., Grants Pass OR 97526. Mr. Clark was born Nov. 16, 1940 in San Diego to George and Ruby Clark. He graduated from high school in San Diego. On June 6, 1980 in San Diego he married Cath- erine Joan Carroll. For four years he worked as a custodian at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He then worked as a cus- todian at San Jose State Uni- versity California for 21 years, where he only missed four days of work and retired in July 1991. In 1993 he moved from San Jose to Selma, and in 2001 to Grants Pass. He enjoyed cats, watching movies, and reading books about war. There are no known survivors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Clark, on Aug.12, 1994.
