Page 4 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 29, 2007 ‘Ditch Digger’ ready with school supplies For the third year, David Anderson Excavating will have a booth at the Illinois Valley Lions Club Labor Day Festival at Jubilee Park with free school supplies for the kids. As in the past, children will be re- quired to “earn” their sup- plies by entertaining the Excavating staff. may just be the difference of having the sup- plies that keep kids returning. “We want the valley kids to get that edge, so we give away supplies each year at the I.V. Lions Festival.” “The kids are real good sports,” says David. “They tell us jokes, sing, dance, whistle and some even re- cite their ABCs (and not always in order) for the opportunity to “win” free school supplies. No one walks away a loser.” With completion of a highly successful season, the Illinois Valley Little League Board of Directors will begin its work for next year with a promo- tional booth at the I.V. Lions Club Labor Day Fes- tival. The team will march in the Labor Day Pa- rade. The league’s parade entry will be led by the 2007 Oregon State Senior Little League Champions who hail right here from Illinois Valley. After se- curing the Southern Oregon’s District 8 Champi- onship over Rogue River, the Illinois Valley team went on to the state championships where it was undefeated in its quest for the state title. The team also participated in the Western States Re- gional Championships. David reports that last year more than 400 pieces were distributed, and that he and his family gave away three backpacks in a drawing for students at Evergreen Elementary, Lorna Byrne Middle and I.V. High schools. This year the plan is to double the give-away of supplies. “We also offer some bonuses for extra enter- tainment. It’s never boring that for sure,” says David. He adds, “Education is everything. If you can’t make it in school, you will have a hard time making it in life, and sometimes it Last year many parents tried to buy supplies from the Anderson Excavating booth, but he says, “No go,” until after 2 p.m. on Monday. Then whatever supplies are left, David and his staff sell them for 25-cents per piece. Final leftover supplies are donated to the teachers who show up at tear-down time on Monday. The booth will be open every day through the festival beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sun- day, and noon after the parade on Monday.
