The guide is Lisa Davis. The park will host an I.V. Chamber mixer on Sept. 7, but will be preceded by one at Crocker Fi- nancial Aug. 17. (Photos by IVN) By DALE SANDBERG Ever had the urge to write a book? You now can, through the wonders of the com- puter. At www.blurb.com anyone can compose and publish a very classy book, in either hardbound or pa- perback versions. The format is supplied by a free downloadable pro- gram. All you have to do is “fill in the blanks.” It is easy to use, and I would say that anyone can do this. The most attractive as- pect is the price. For just one 40-page hardbound book, you pay $29.99 plus ship- ping. In my case the ship- ping cost $7. And that’s not all. When you have your book published, you can go to the company’s Book Store; make your volume public; set your selling price; and Blurb will do the rest. So let’s say that you price your book at $39.99. That’s $10 more than what you pay, and seven people buy your book. At the end of the month, Blurb will send you the difference less $5 each as its fee. Also at the Book Store you can browse the work of other folks and buy them too. So: Go to Blurb and register. Download the pro- gram called “Book Smart” and load it to your com- puter. Choose the type of book you want to make, which dictates the format. It is all fairly easy to follow. Dale Sandberg (Photo provided) One word of advice. Use what Blurb suggests in the format. You can change the font and text size, but they are rather picky, and if you choose something they have a hard time using, they sim- ply change it back. It seems restrictive, but it’s not. My guess why this hap- pens is that their computers are set up to use this format. Maybe that’s why they can offer to publish a single copy for that price. What- ever type of book you have had a hankering to publish, whether photos or a story, give this a try. My bet is that you’ll like what you find. To preview my book, go the Book Store and type “Bent, Twisted and Up in Flames” in the search box in the upper right-hand corner. You then can preview the first 15 pages.
