Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, July 25, 2007 Page 4 SOG enhancing its Kerby facilities using grants By JOYCE ABRAMS With $9,000 in grants from three generous founda- tions, the Southern Oregon Guild’s Gallery & Artists Center in the RCC Belt Bldg. in Kerby has begun a planned transformation to improve the gallery and fur- ther build public identity for it and the Guild artists. The first step in the plan has been accomplished thanks to Jerry Work, John Ellis, Bill Ott, Linda Nay- dol, Joyce Abrams, Sandy Miller, Heidi Rousseau, Bobbie Blakely, and Bruce Stone. A brand-new paint job brightens the hallways, and the center’s room in the Belt Bldg. The transforma- tion is startling and uplifting when you enter through the huge old front doors. Now that artists’ work can be viewed in more pleasant surroundings, the next steps are to install a security system in the gal- lery; to add secure display cases for the smaller works; and to add what additional lighting is needed. Some storage and work space also needs to be added in the artists center, although all the equipment is avail- able for use now. Also part of the plan for use of grant funds are some new signage and a new bro- chure for the Guild, gallery and artists center; up- grading the SOG Website to take advantage of newer available technology; and expanding promotion of the gallery and center to the traveling public and across the broader Oregon and Northern California regions. SOG’s accomplishments to date include: 1) with the help of previous grants, build- ing an inventory of more than $20,000 worth of equipment to be utilized by Southwest- ern Oregon artists to expand their marketing efforts and sales success; 2) establishing a young gallery and artists center where Guild members can hone their business and promotional skills; give and take classes and workshops; and display and sell their work in their own gallery. And 3) creating a vision of a larger gallery & art center in Illinois Valley, which can act as a learning center in the business of art, in collaboration with Rogue Community College, as a support for artists’ profes- sional growth, and as a ma- jor addition to defining the region as a center of the arts. Based on these accom- plishments and the planned next steps for SOG, three of three requests to foundations earned favorable results: $4,000 from the Ralph L. Smith Foundation, $2,000 from The Four Way Foun- dation, and $3,000 from The Carpenter Foundation. SOG invites profes- sional and developing artists and supporters of the arts to visit the gallery and artists center in Kerby and to con- sider joining the Guild in support of this vision. Mr. Morrissey, retired from the U.S. Navy after a 24- year career, was born Jan. 1, 1934 in Omaha, Neb. He was born at 12:01 a.m., making him the first baby born that year in Omaha. He was proud of his Navy service. After his retirement in April 1975, he worked in the Bay Area of California for Shell Oil Co., Kaiser Center Inc., Mt. Diablo Hospital, and AltaBates & Herrick Hospital. He and his wife, Sandy, moved to Cave Junction in July 1994. Mr. Morrissey became interested in golfing thanks to Rex Denham, former PGA pro at Illinois Valley Golf Course. Besides enjoying golf, he served as president of the golf association board “off and on.” Besides his wife of 37 years, Sandy, of Cave Junction, Mr. Morrissey is survived by two daughters, Linda Wit- mond, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Shelley Johnson, of Valley Springs, Calif.; and five grand- children. In lieu of flowers, the fam- ily suggests memorial dona- tions to The American Cancer Society, or a charity of the do- nor’s choice. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of ar- rangements. Mabel Vaughn in Bellingham, Wash. In November 1934 she married Ronald E. Cole in Yreka, Calif. She had lived in O’Brien since 1950. She was a member of the Baptist Church in O’Brien for many years. She taught Sunday school; and enjoyed gardening, embroidering and baking. Mrs. Cole is survived by her two sons, Ronald Cole, of O’Brien, and Roy Cole, of Salem; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death. All flags at public institutions were flown at half- staff throughout Oregon Thurs- day, July 19 in honor of U.S. Army Cpl. Kory Duane Wiens and his dog, “Cooper,” by or- der of Gov. Kulongoski. Wiens, 20, of Independ- ence, died alongside his dog on Friday, July 6, 2007 in Muhammad Sath, Iraq.
