Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, June 27, 2007 Page 4 With 400 more employed during May, Jo County jobless rate declined to 6.1% Josephine County pay- roll employment gained 400 jobs during May, and the unemployment rate fell from 7.0 percent in April to 6.1 percent, said Oregon Employment Dept. (OED). Josephine County’s May jobless rate in 2007 was 5.9 percent. Seasonal upturns in construction, and leisure and hospitality were responsible for most of last month’s rise. During the year, payroll employment fell by 140 jobs. There were 2,161 peo- ple estimated as unem- ployed in the county’s labor force of 35,374 during May. After posting strong job growth through much of the 2000s, “the housing reces- sion has come home to roost” in the county’s manu- facturing and construction sectors, said OED. During the past 12 months, construction em- ployment declined by 70 jobs. During that time, manufacturing employment fell nearly 7 percent, or a loss of 240 jobs. Reductions in wood product manufac- turing jobs accounted for just less than half of those. Not only does Josephine County have a high concen- tration of wood products manufacturing jobs, relative to Oregon, but it also has many firms making house- hold furniture, cabinets, fur- nishings such as sinks and doors, said OED. All these industry sectors bear some exposure to the nationwide slowdown in residential housing construction. Retail trade gained 30 jobs throughout the month, but is essentially unchanged during the year. Financial activities employment also ‘Bernie’ Cornett made to Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was born to Joseph and Mary Quadrio on Aug. 2, 1946 in Willits, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet- nam War. On Jan. 17, 1987 in Milton, Wash., he married Re- becca Elaine Sawyer. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in the log- ging industry, and operated a skidder and back hoe. Three years ago he moved from Vernonia, Ore. to Cave Junc- tion. Mr. Quadrio was a mem- ber of AARP. He enjoyed rac- ing cars. Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Quadrio, of Cave Junction; a son, Eric Quadrio, of Ukiah, Calif.; a daughter, Falina Quadrio, of Ukiah; two step-sons, Ron Maldonado, of Vernonia, and James Maldonado, of Phoenix, Ariz.; his father and step-mother, Joe and Martha Quadrio, of Silver Springs, Nev.; a sister, Mary Joe Quadrio; and seven grand- children. She studied nursing at South- ern Oregon College. On Nov. 10, 1984 in Lake Tahoe, Calif., she married William Murray Yeoman, who survives. She worked as a registered nurse at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford; and later, she was sales manager of an emergency medical supplies firm. Mrs. Yeoman was a mem- ber of St. Anne Catholic Church. She was a religious education teacher at St. Patrick of the For- est Catholic Church in Cave Junction. She also volunteered as a teacher’s aide in local schools. For seven years, she was a mem- ber of the team preparing the women’s retreat at St. Rita Re- treat Center. She enjoyed ani- mals, water skiing and, espe- cially, being a mother. Besides her husband, sur- vivors are five daughters, Nata- sha Yeoman, of Eugene, Kel- cie, Raesha, McKenzie and McKayla Yeoman, all of Selma; two sons, Marcus Yeo- man, of Selma, and Jason Yeo- man, of Eugene; her father and step-mother, Eugene “Gene” and Alice Modrich, of Eugene; two brothers, Kevin Modrich, of Cave Junction, and Michael Modrich, of Junction City; and a grandson. Her mother, Marla Modrich, died Feb. 26, 2002. Wilfong. Affectionately known as “Little Bit,” she grew up with four sisters and a brother in Tennessee. She graduated from high school in Erwin, and moved to San Diego. While moving around with her military husband, she worked as a clerk in military base stores. She retired from Rite Aid after 15 years. She moved to Cave Junction in 1989 from Poway, Calif. She was a member of VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Her hobbies included dancing, music and social ac- tivities with friends. She was an award-winning bowler She also was known for dressing up, and for her love of animals, especially dogs. She is remem- bered as a loyal friend. Surviving are her daugh- ter, Gayle Werden, of Selma; a brother, Haskel Wilfong, of Venice, Fla.; a sister, Frances Howard, of Erwin; and a grandson. Bernard L. “Bernie” Cornett, 75, of Cave Junction, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at his home. A memorial service was held Friday, June 22 at Com- munity Bible Church in Cave Junction with Pastor Dave Gordon officiating. Southern Oregon Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Cornett was born Aug. 14, 1931 in Grand Rapids, Mich. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He came to Cave Junc- tion in 1953 after five years service with the U.S. Air Force. On March 16, 1991, in Cave Junction, he married Jeanie C. Beem. Mr. Cornett worked in the lumber industry, including be- ing a “pond monkey” at the former Cabax Mill in Kerby. He was a member of Com- munity Bible Church. He vol- unteered for Head Start for 10 years and did volunteer work at his church. His hobbies were RV traveling, fishing, ball games, and his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Jeanie, of Cave Junction; a son, Steven L. Cornett, of Reno, Nev.; a daughter, Teresa L. Nathan, of Hiouchi, Calif..; a brother, Robert Cornett, of Kerby; two step-daughters, DeAnn Russo, of Grants Pass, and Dersiee Casteel, of Brook- ings; 18 grandchildren; a niece; and two nephews. Preceding him in death was his step-son, Darrin Firestenberg, and one sister. Rick T. Quadrio Rick Thomas Quadrio, 60, of Cave Junction, died Monday, June 11, 2007 at his home. She moved to Selma in 1971 from Livermore, Calif. ‘Betty’ Fillyaw A Celebration Gathering and potluck for Mary “Betty” Fillyaw, 84, who died Satur- day, June 23, 2007, will be held Saturday, June 30 at 1 p.m. at Sportsman Tavern in Downtown Cave Junction. Mrs. Fillyaw, of Cave Junction, died in a Grants Pass care center. A memorial ser- vice will be held Friday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Eagle Point Na- tional Cemetery. She was born Feb. 2, 1923 in Erwin, Tenn. to Ross & Eula rose by 30 jobs in May and is just above the year-before total. Health care and social assistance employment showed no change in May. During the year, this sector gained 160 jobs with broad based gains in nursing and residential care as well as ambulatory health care services such as physician’s offices, physical therapy facilities, and medical clin- ics and health centers. The job growth leader during the past year was leisure and hospitality, up by 180 jobs. New restaurants sprout- ing up like dandelions in the spring helped boost employ- ment growth, OED said. Despite a monthly up- tick in local government jobs, during the year gov- ernment fell by 130 jobs in Josephine County. Local government (-120) and state government (-20) employ- ment were below May 2006 figures.
