Coots A memorial gathering has been held for Waldo Road resident James Dwayne Coots, 51, who died at his rural Cave Junction home May 17, 2007. His survivors, besides those listed last week, also include a sister, Tina Brick, of Cave Junction; and a brother, Charles E. Coots, of Grants Pass, according to information provided by Tina Brick. The center, a collabora- tive effort between RCC, Southern Oregon Head Start, Southern Oregon Educational Service District Early Child- hood Service, and the city of Grants Pass, is designed to benefit children and student teachers for years to come. The day’s schedule in- cludes an open house and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new playground con- structed by volunteers from the Home Builders Associa- tion of Josephine County. The playground allows children to play in a natural environment. Children’s activities also are planned, and refreshments will be served. A storyteller chair will be made in memory of Sharon Marchant, an early childhood educator for more than 40 years. The chair will be cre- ated by local artist Janet Hig- gins, and the rendition of the chair will be introduced dur- ing the open house. The Head Start facility serves approximately 75 low- income and disabled pre- school-age children and their families. The lab school pro- vides teaching, learning and observation opportunities for up to 135 RCC Early Child- hood Education program stu- dents and 93 high school stu- dents. Design proportions, such as window visibility, all keep a child’s perspective in mind. Providing early education is important because 90 percent of brain growth occurs before age 5. The building, with 7,000, square feet of space, was funded by multiple grants secured by RCC, the RCC Foundation, the city of Grants Pass and Southern Oregon Head Start. Donors toward the $1.4 million project on Redwood Campus include the RCC Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, Collins Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation, the Carpenter Foundation, and the Southern Oregon Child and Family Council Head Start Board of Directors. The land was provided by RCC. Gisele Gould Gisele (Gigi) Gould, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend passed away on Friday, May 4, 2007. Born October 21, 1964 to Warren and Ginette Gould in New York State, she moved to Cave Junc- tion, OR. in 1979. GiGi with her spark, passion and bright joyful spirit was a “people per- son” in the truest sense of the word. She genuinely cared about others and saw good in everyone. Having always been a spiritual person, during her illness GiGi found great comfort and strength in God. GiGi is survived by her father Warren Gould, sister Marie Gould Voss, nephew Jason Daly Voss, Uncle John Gozza, cousin Jerry Gozza and her significant other and best friend Dennis Daly.
