Page 4 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, March 7, 2007 Allen Gulch hike set Saturday, March 10 By SCOTT JORGENSEN IVN Staff Writer Bill Gray, a valley bi- ologist, will lead a hike through the Allen Gulch area on Saturday, March 10. Gray has conducted plant surveys around Illinois Valley for several years, and hikes the area two to four times a year. The Allen Gulch area is included in the proposed East Fork Illinois Bureau of Land Management (BLM) logging project. Gray said that he wants to show the areas that would be affected by the proposed plan. “I thought it would be good for people to see this as soon as possible while they still have a little bit of time to perhaps give input to the BLM if they choose to,” Gray said. BLM already has com- pleted an environmental assessment on the East Fork proposal, but has yet to make a final decision on the project, Gray said. “It sounds like they’re probably going to make a decision within the next month or two,” Gray said. “Anyone who’s interested should have the opportunity to plug into this process and to make their views known, especially with an area as important as this area.” Gray said that some trees already are marked for cutting, which may concern some residents. “There are some people in this community who feel like that is putting the cart before the horse,” Gray said. The hike will cover 3 to 4 miles of mostly level ground, Gray said. Partici- pants should bring a sack lunch and clothing appropri- ate for the weather. Hikers are to meet at 10 a.m. at the Siskiyou Pro- ject’s lower parking lot in Takilma. Anna Mae Richards college she supported herself as a maid and nanny for several wealthy families in Brentwood, Calif. and surrounding areas. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from University of California at Santa Barbara, and earned her master’s degree from Uni- versity of Southern California at Los Angeles. She moved to Cave Junc- tion more than 27 years ago after retiring as a professor of physical education and depart- ment chairman at Santa Monica College in California. She loved gardening (especially roses), golfing, rid- ing horses, caring for her ani- mals, and sharing her love and sense of humor with her friends and relatives. She was known for giving of herself to those needing a sympathetic ear or a shoulder to lean on. She be- lieved in helping others to achieve their highest potential in life as a worthy cause. One of her favorite phrases was, “Let your light shine unto others,” and she always had a positive outlook on life. Taylor’s Country Store on Saturday nights was a weekly highlight. She was a member of Illinois Valley Sen- ior Center. Surviving is her daughter, Nealane D. Riem, of Vancou- ver, Wash. She also leaves be- hind two grandchildren, and a son-in-law. Her property care- taker, Lonnie Bourgo, also is considered part of her family. Mrs. Richards was pre- ceded in death in 1992 by her ex-husband, Robert L. Calloway, whom she married in 1942; and her second hus- band, Neal D. Richards, on March 1, 1958, whom she wed in 1957 in Los Angeles; and all of her siblings. Arrangements are being directed by Illinois Valley Fu- neral Home. A memorial service in late spring will be announced for Cave Junction resident Anna Mae Richards, 86, who died at home Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007. “Anna Mae” was born on Sept. 26, 1920 in Lemmon, S.D. on a small rural farm (“a little house on the prairie.”) She was raised by her aunt and un- cle after her mother’s death at her birth, and her father’s death a few years later. As a 17-year-old she ar- rived in Southern California to live with another aunt and un- cle to earn her high school di- ploma. Dr. Virginia Smith, spe- cialist in early childhood devel- opment, spoke to an enthusias- tic crowd of women. “Hearts and Flowers” was the theme, and the Scripture text was Psalm 147. Saturday, March 3 was the International Women’s Minis- tries Day of Prayer. Women participated throughout the morning worship service. The “Prophecies of Hope for the American People” pro- gram with speaker Darrin Bartell of Amazing Facts will continue Thursday, March 8 at 7 p.m. with ‘History’s Greatest Religious Cover-up!” in the Josephine County Bldg. in Cave Junction. Friday night at 7 the title will be, “The Subject That Satan Hates.” Saturday, March 10, the title will be, “The Long- est and Most Amazing Bible Prophecy, Part 1.” Monday, March 12, at 7 p.m. the subject will be, “The Longest and Most Amazing Prophecy, Part 2.” Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m., “Bible Secrets to Good Health.” Each night the community Senior Nutrition Menu is cordially invited to these free seminars.
