A private service was arranged through Illinois Val- ley Funeral Home. Mr. Odam was born on July 7, 1918, in Spur, Texas. He moved to Illinois Valley in 1980 from Escondido, Calif. He attended Bridgeview Com- munity Church in Cave Junc- tion. He is survived by his wife, Lila Ree Odam, of Cave Junc- tion; two sons, Glenn Odam, of Montrose, Colo., and John Odam, of El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Margaret Garrison, of Cave Junction; a brother, Bill Odam, of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Ona Dell Ku- bley, of Monticello, Ind.; and nine grandchildren. Harold R. Pierson Harold R. Pierson, 66, of Cave Junction, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. Arrangements are pend- ing at Illinois Valley Funeral Home. Donna Gail Thornton Donna Gail Thornton, 56, of Grants Pass, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at a Medford health-care center. Your reward will be great in heaven. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.” Seventh-day Adventist Church, Cave Junction By Patty Hyland The church has a Reli- gious Liberty Service once a year and Saturday, Feb. 3 was the exciting day with many participating. The church was crowded. The title of Pastor Vern Hyland’s sermon was, “Do You Value Your Religious Liberty?” In many parts of the world religious freedom does not exist, so how blessed we are in the United States. The choir sang an appropriate song that touched the hearts of many. Testimonies were given, as many felt the moving of the Holy Spirit. Mrs. Thornton was born on Dec. 21, 1950 at The Women’s Hospital in Pasa- dena, Calif. She graduated from high school, and from Sacramento House of Beauty College in Sacramento, as a licensed beautician. Following graduation she worked for sev- eral years in Sacramento. In 1975 she moved from Sacramento to Cave Junction, where she lived until moving to Grants Pass in 1996 due to illness. While living in Cave Junction she was self- employed as a resident artist with special emphasis on draw- ing animals. She also owned a station at Original Cut Com- pany in Cave Junction. She attended Rogue River Assembly of God Church. She assisted the Christmas Basket Program in Cave Junction. She loved her dogs, art, calligraphy, doing charcoal sketches, poems, reading and cooking. She also enjoyed playing bingo. Survivors include her two sisters, Monica Thornton, of Cave Junction, and Debra Thornton, of Ashland; her two brothers, Ed Thornton, of Grants Pass, and Eldon Thorn- ton, of Sacramento; and 11 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mom, Fran, in 1986, and her dad, Vern Thornton, in 1982; and her brothers, Mitch Thornton, in 1990, and Dave Thornton, in 1992. Alice Marie Lloyd Former Cave Junction resident Alice Marie Lloyd, 84, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 in a Grants Pass rest home Arrangements are pending at Illinois Valley Fu- neral Home. Melvin Steward A graveside service for Cave Junction resident Melvin Steward, 81, who died in a Grants Pass nursing home on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, was held Wednesday, Feb. 7. The service was at Eagle Point National Cemetery with Pastor David Stewart officiat- ing. He is Mr. Steward’s son- in-law. Mr. Steward was born on Oct. 8, 1925 in Norman, Okla. to Leon Steward and Ila Bessie Yandell Steward. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1946 he moved to Illinois Valley, where he worked as a choker setter for many years. Surviving are his wife, Betty Steward; two sons, Melvin Lee Steward and Keith Steward; a daughter, Brenda Stewart; and 10 grandchildren. Arrangements were han- dled by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. Jack Longman Cave Junction resident Jack Longman, 80, died Jan. 30, 2007 at home. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at Community Bible Church in Cave Junction. The committee was formed by the county board of commissioners last year, and is comprised of citizens and personnel from existing fire districts, as well as per- sons representing Realtors, insurance agencies and home builders. The group is expected to present its rec- ommendations to the com- missioners next month. Prior to its Feb. 1 meet- ing, the committee had nar- rowed its focus to three op- tions: a fire district with taxation; a district with one franchise provider; and a single franchise provider overseen by the county commissioners. However, the commit- tee voted unanimously to eliminate the third option, then discussed the pros and cons of the remaining two. A franchise arrange- ment would be easier to im- plement, and there is at least one local company, Rural/ Metro Fire Dept., that could provide fire protection ser- vices to rural areas not in existing fire districts. However, such a system wouldn’t guarantee uniform participation in the district, and a private company would lack the governmen- tal authority to conduct building inspections or other similar functions. Harold Haugen, a com- mittee member and former Josephine County commis- sioner, said that the ordi- nance process for creating a franchise would take 114 business days. A fire district model is consistent with the national norm, and would ensure equal participation among all of its members and would be eligible for state and federal grants. Residents of the district would be able to deduct fire protection fees from their taxes, and would directly elect members of the board of directors. The biggest downside of establishing a fire district is the public’s usual reluc- tance to accept any new taxes. Also, forming a dis- trict could involve capital acquisition costs, and could take anywhere from one to two years. “It’s the most difficult of all the options,” said committee member Brian Robinson. Haugen made a motion to accept the list of pros and cons for all the proposals as part of the public record. That motion was approved. Committee members also voted unanimously to schedule a workshop with the board of commissioners to discuss the remaining options and begin the proc- ess of soliciting public opin- ion. The committee’s next meeting is set for Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 157 of the court- house.
