Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Sunday, Jan. 21 was an opportunity to appreciate Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. They further the church mis- sion to extend God’s promises and protection to the poor, sick, brokenhearted and oppressed. Among their good works are helping at Harvest Kitchen at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, and helping to stock the local food pantry. Mr. Harvill was born on June 22, 1928 in San Jose, Calif. to George and Ora Har- vill. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. He worked 25 years in the lumber industry. He also worked 16 years in partnership with Jim McCracken as owner/ operator of the Cave Junction Dairy Queen. They retired in 1992, approximately a year after the business was fire- bombed and was remodeled. He leaves behind his com- panion, Jim McCracken. Survivors include three sisters, Sharon Woods and Trudy Zelenka, both of Scio, Ore., and Sheila Passenger, of Goldendale, Wash.; and a brother, Stephen Wilden, of Astoria, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Fern Morley; and his brother, Karl Harvill. After graduating from Illinois Valley High School in 1954, he joined the U.S. Air Force and moved to Alaska. He served for 10 years and was honorably discharged in 1964. He also was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army National Guard after serving one enlistment. On Dec. 28, 1976 he mar- ried Beverly Ann Johnson in Grants Pass. While living in Cave Junction, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service during the 1960s and retired as a crew boss in the mid-1970s. He had lived in Rogue Valley since 1950, moving from California. His hobbies included leather working, wood-work, pottery, fishing, hunting, camp- ing, and outdoor activities. He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Ivy and Rhonda Troutt, both of Grants Pass, and Kelly Ivy, of Cave Junction; two sons, Michael Ivy, of Everett, Wash., and Roy Ivy, of Salem; three step- daughters, Karen Hampton, of Portland, Joyce Bryant, of Medford, and Joanna Hamp- ton, of Grass Valley, Calif.; two step-sons, Marvin Hamp- ton, of Eugene, and Ben Hampton, of Grants Pass; 25 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. The state had an overall grade of D+. The report graded the 50 states, District of Colum- bia and Puerto Rico in four categories: smoke-free air, tobacco taxes, funding for tobacco prevention and restrictions on youth access to tobacco products. Oregon received the following grades: Tobacco Prevention and Control Spending, F; Smoke-free Air, C; Cigarette Taxes, C; and Youth Access to To- bacco Products, D. Harold A. Harrop enjoyed fishing. Mr. Harrop is survived by his wife, LaVaugn Gould Har- rop, of Cave Junction; a daugh- ter, Krista Harrop Hunt, of San Diego; and two grandchildren. Illinois Valley Funeral Home was in charge of ar- rangements. A private service was ar- ranged for Cave Junction resi- dent Harold Arthur Harrop, 74, who died at home Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007. Mr. Harrop was born on Dec. 28, 1932 in Los Angeles. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Masonic lodge in Los Angeles, and Illi- nois Valley Golf Club. He also A memorial service for Orlee L. Currier, 95, will be held Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at Valley Evangelical Free Church in Cave Junction, at Laurel Road and N. Old Stage Road. Look for our column printed on the fourth Wednesday edition of the ‘Illinois Valley News.’ Q: Can I have chemotherapy or radiation therapy at the same time I have Hospice care at home? A: Perhaps. Hospice is not only the compassionate home care it is so well known for, but it also is an insurance option and benefit. Insurance companies provide a “menu” of services available to clients. If you have private insur- ance, you may ask them what your choices are. Some insur- ance companies classify “hospice” as “ home care”, so be specific with your questions. At Lovejoy Hospice, we have been successful helping some patients optimize their available benefits. Medicare and Medicaid do not typically pay simultaneously for both Hospice care and advanced life extending medical proce- dures for the same diagnosis. Medicare and Medicaid pay Hospice directly, and most hos- pices limit the chemotherapy and radiation therapy that hospice is able to fund from that pool. Hospice may consider special therapies such as these and others on an individual basis if they are necessary to relieve (palliate) a symptom and to pro- vide comfort. Physicians and hospices can give information to help patients and families weigh benefits and burdens of any particular therapy so that the patient can choose what is best for him/her. Orlee L.
