Currier, 95, of Cave Junction -- who met several famous aviators -- died Dec. 15, 2006 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford as the result of a fall at his home that caused a brain hemor- rhage. Interment was conducted at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at Valley Evangelical Free Church, on Laurel Road at Old Stage Road in Cave Junction. Mr. Currier was born to Orlando and Eugena Carrier on March 8, 1911 in Lansing, Mich. As a member of his high school track team he became a state champion. He became interested in aircraft at an early age. At 14 he went to work for Michigan Airways, and part of his compensation was flight time. He owned and piloted his first airplane when he was 16. He also flew in air races, and performed stunts at air shows. Darrin Bartell a vibrant young man from Texas, will share the messages of Daniel and Revelation. He has taken his training at the Amazing Facts College of Evangelism in Roseville, Calif. He is a gradu- ate of Walla Walla College in Washington state. Darrin has held crowds spellbound in many Western states as he proclaims the mes- sage of the last events to occur before Jesus returns in Clouds of Glory. After pass- ing the engine and aircraft tests, Mr. Currier became the 874th licensed aircraft me- chanic in the United States at the age of 16. His next four years, de- scribed as exciting, were spent overhauling, streamlining and fine-tuning airplane engines -- most exciting of all was when the pilots of the planes he worked on took first place in racing. From 1931 to the mid- 1960s he worked in the aircraft industry: Central United Air- ways in Lansing, Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Boeing Aircraft Co. in Seattle, Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego, and General Dynamics at its mis- sile site in Roswell, N.M. Fol- lowing an injury at a missile silo, he retired from active air- craft and missile work, and moved to a quiet, rural area for health reasons. In 1953, Mr. Currier mar- ried Dorothy Surine, who died in 1999. The only break during his career was during World War II when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a belly gunner in a B-17 Flying Fortress conducting bombing missions over Europe. His aviation career gave him the opportunity to work on the aircraft of -- and personally meet -- Amelia Earhart, Charles Lind- bergh, and Howard Hughes. After retiring from the air- craft industry, Mr. Currier be- came a building contractor. He dabbled in real estate until his death. He is survived by his late wife’s two daughters from her previous marriage. He also leaves behind many friends. ‘Chris’ Fitzgerald A funeral service for Cave Junction resident Christian “Chris” Fitzgerald, 54, who died at home Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, was held Saturday, Jan. 13 at Immanuel United Meth- odist Church in Cave Junction. Officiating at the service was the Rev. Charles Chase, pastor of the church. Burial followed at Deer Creek Ceme- tery in Selma. Mr. Fitzgerald was born on Oct. 2, 1952 in Long Beach, Calif. He had lived in the Cave Junction and Kerby areas for 30 years. He was known for his love for his family. He also enjoyed the outdoors, including picking mushrooms, and he enjoyed helping people. Mr. Fitzgerald also was known for his interest in many topics, and for writing what his family said were beau- tiful letters and poems. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a son, Christian Fitzgerald, of Glen Ellen, Calif.; a daughter, Tricia (last name unavailable), of Clovis, Calif.; four brothers, William Fitzgerald, of Glen Ellen, Michael Fitzgerald, of Sebastopol, Calif., Daniel Fitz- gerald, of Vista, Calif., and Patrick Fitzgerald, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; four sisters, Clau- dia Yates, of Napa, Calif., Elizabeth Cornett, of Torrance, Calif., Mary Montgomery, of brought the worship hour mes- sage to a full church. He gave DVDs to all present. Saturday, Jan. 13, Pastor Vern Hyland had a sermon he titled, “Empty Palaces.” His scripture was II Peter 3:11. The Madrone Adventist Church School provided music. A Time of Prayer and Fasting for healing and the power of the Holy Spirit was held following the service. Barber A private family memorial service was held for Cave Junc- tion resident Michael Allen Bar- ber, 38, who died at home on Jan. 7, 2007. Mr. Barber was born on Dec. 25, 1968 in Calexico, Calif. He is survived by two sons, Aaron Barber and A.J. Barber, both of Grants Pass; two daugh- ters, Emily Barber and Olivia Barber, both of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a sister, Carol Hipp, of Cave Junc- tion; and a brother, Rodney Bar- ber, of Holtville, Calif.; and nu- merous nieces and nephews. Dim- mick St. in Grants Pass, is providing influenza vaccinations between 8 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 and 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Cost for the flu vaccination is $30, but public health will bill Medicare, Oregon Health Plan, and BlueCross-BlueShield of Oregon. Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness. Every year in the United States, 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized with flu complications, and approximately 36,000 people die from the flu. Flu season generally begins in October and can last into May, with the greatest number of infections between late De- cember and early March. The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC). “It takes approximately two weeks for an adult to develop peak immunity after vaccination,” said public health. “If you have not yet had your flu vaccination, now is the time to get it.” CDC reports that, so far, there are sporadic cases of flu in Oregon, but some states are reporting widespread infection.
