Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, January 10, 2007 Goin’ with the flow, septic business cleans up Road rage results in injury to Merlin man Many Illinois Valley property owners have a sep- tic tank to maintain, although if all is flowing smoothly, it’s unlikely that the system is thought of often. The tanks aren’t mainte- nance-free, however. To ensure proper function, accu- mulated solids must be re- moved every three to six years, depending on the tank size and number of users. If a tank becomes too full, solid waste flows into the drainfield rather than settling out, clogging the drain pies and leading to a failure. Furthermore, exten- sive rain can cause sewage lines to back up if the tank is in need of pumping. For routine maintenance or emergencies, Joel Perkins and Ken Stern, co-owners of Outback Septic Service, are the valley’s go-to guys in the septic field. “There are a fair number of ‘emergency’ calls in this business,” Perkins said. “You know what I mean if you’ve ever had sewage backing up into your house,” he said with a certain smile. Business, by its nature, keeps flowing. Perkins recommends having tanks serviced before wet weather sets in, as his heavy pumper truck does not have four-wheel drive. “My truck got stuck three times last year,” Per- kins said. “When the ground is too soft, slick or steep I can’t get the truck in.” House-guests can over- tax a tank that’s overdue for service, creating big prob- lems quickly -- and at the worst possible time. Perkins recalls having been called about a house where sewage was backing up during a wedding, due to the number of people using the facilities. “Unfortunately for them, the home was in Talent,” Perkins said. “We service only Illinois Valley, and we love it,” he said, noting that he and his wife, Laura, grew up here. “If it has been five years or longer since you last pumped your septic tank,” Perkins said, “now is the time to set an appointment, espe- cially with the rainy season.” The cost to pump a 1,000-gallon tank with an exposed lid is $300. To dig and expose the lid there is a minimum charge of $50. There is an additional fee of $100, in the event of an emergency call. Phone Outback Septic at 592-6307. When the light turned green, it added, Ogden turned left onto Sav- age and struck Campbell, who was walking around the front of the pickup. Campbell suffered ma- jor injuries and was taken by American Medical Response to Three Rivers Community Hospital. Oregon State Po- lice assisted investigation of the collision.
