News’) Injured Kerby woman dies in Portland The victim of a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident, Kerby resident Vicki Lee LaVada, 58, died in a Port- land hospital Sunday, Aug. 28, as her husband, Larry, decided to take her off life support, he said. She was struck by a northbound pickup truck after she had gone to check the mail at 23823 Redwood Hwy. on the east side of the road Friday, Aug. 26 at ap- proximately 5:25 p.m., said Oregon State Police. The pickup, with door signs reading FD Thomas, of Central Point, was driven by Gold Hill resident Carl G. Buell, 44, OSP said. Wit- nesses at Kerbyville Farm, across from the scene, said that she was knocked ap- proximately 15 feet. Buell was cited on a charge of violation of the basic rule (driving too fast for conditions), said OSP. Buell told OSP that he didn’t at first see LaVada, and that he braked and swerved to avoid a stopped car, struck some mailboxes and then the woman, who tried to run away. The pickup knocked her face down onto a graveled drive. Medical aid and other assistance at the scene were provided by American Medical Response, a pass- ing ER physician, Illinois Valley Fire District, and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. Mrs. LaVada was taken by a Mercy Flights helicop- ter from Sauer’s Flat to Rogue Valley Medical Cen- ter in Medford; then trans- ferred to Portland. LaVada’s first two wives died of cancer. Described as a “very dangerous wanted felon,” Conan James Lapping, 24, was arrested in Crescent City, Calif. after a shooting incident near Rogue River. Oregon State Police said that Lapping was ar- rested Saturday morning, Aug. 27 following a car chase with shots fired, and a standoff at a house the day before in the East Evans Creek Road area southeast of Grants Pass. Numerous police agen- cies, including an OSP SWAT team, were involved. Also sought in connec- tion with the incident was John Tomsson Hench, 22, considered armed and dan- gerous, OSP said. It added that he surrendered volun- tarily to Josephine County Sheriff’s Office on the 27th. In Crescent City, Lap- ping, surrounded by officers from the city police force, California Highway Patrol and Del Norte County Sher- iff’s Office, at first refused commands to comply. He was wearing a bal- listic vest and was armed with a 9mm handgun. He also had a wound from be- ing shot Friday, Aug. 26 while trying to elude OSP officers and firing at them. Repair set for Agness Road WOMAN HIT, DRAGGED - Riding in her motorized wheel chair, Cave Junction resi- dent Kelly Smith, age unavailable, was struck by a pickup truck and dragged under it for approximately 70 feet. Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) said the acci- dent occurred about 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28. Smith was on the sidewalk at the edge of the Shop Smart parking lot in Downtown Cave Junction, said JCSO, when Chris- topher Pratt, 48, turned from the parking lot southbound and struck the wheelchair. Smith was reported in fair condition at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford where she was taken Sunday by a Mercy Flights helicopter that landed at Illinois Val- ley Airport. Indications were that she suffered a broken leg and possibly other inju- ries. It appeared that Pratt is an employee of a helicopter company helping fight the Selma fire. Crews will construct a large retaining wall up the Rogue River from Gold Beach at milepost 31.6, said the U.S. Forest Service. The project is to repair road damage caused by a slide during a 2002 storm. A public road closure continues in effect on that segment of the road due to safety concerns, said the forest service. Mr. Green was born Nov. 1, 1950 in Green Bay, Wis. He moved from California to Grants Pass 20 years ago. He ran a service station in Selma for 12 years, and worked for ESAM for 3 1/2 years and Re- bel Transport for a year. On Feb. 13, 2005 in Grants Pass, he married the former Ulanna Mathilda Washburn, who survives. He was a member of Cal- vary Church of Grants Pass on Midway Avenue. He enjoyed painting and drawing, sanding and restoring picture frames and many other art forms. After her birth the family moved to Oregon, and for the last 25 years she lived in O’Brien. She owned and operated what was the O’Brien Restau- rant for 10 years with her chil- dren. Mrs. Kinley is survived by her two daughters, Teresa Terrill, of Shasta Lake City, Calif., and Candy Clark, of O’Brien; her sister, Lee Ander- son, of Winston; three grand- children; and two great- grandchildren.
