Page 9 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 17, 2005 Penalties assessed by DEQ ROLL-OVER DRIVER TREATED - Richard E. Davis, 86, of McKinleyville, Calif., appar- ently fell asleep at the wheel of his 1995 Nissan on a curve and rolled the vehicle, which struck a tree across from the former Stoney Front Tavern in Kerby, said Ore- gon State Police. Davis was cited on a charge of failing to drive within his travel lane. American Medical Response (AMR) took him to Three Rivers Community Hos- pital in Grants Pass where he was treated and released following the 3:30 a.m. crash Friday, Aug. 12. Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) responded to assist AMR. (Photo by Dale & Elaine Sandberg/IVFD photographers.) Twenty-one penalties totaling $364,706 were lev- ied during June by the Ore- gon Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ). None of the penalties were in Josephine County, but two were in Jackson County. Our LLC was assessed $11,279 for “openly accu- mulating asbestos- containing material during commercial building reno- vation” in Medford. The fine is being appealed. Southern Oregon Lum- ber in Central Point was assessed $1,278 for “failing to install an overfill preven- tion on an underground stor- age tank.” The largest fine, said DEQ, totals $186,432 against Pacific Seafoods Co. in Clatsop County for “exceeding waste discharge limitations” from July 1999 through December 2003. CofC planning concert series ANOTHER KERBY WRECK - American Medical Response sent three ambulances to a two-vehicle crash in Kerby near It’s a Burl at approximately 2:22 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11. The response, which included IVFD firefighters, was due to the fact that the vehicles contained several people, but indications are that only the drivers suffered injuries. Oregon State Police said that a 1981 Volkswagen van, driven by Talent, Ore. resident Jessica Fleeger, 18, struck the rear of a 1996 Plymouth van, driven by Paul Norberg, of Toledo, Ore. The India Children’s Choir will present a free community concert at Takilma Bible Church, 10343 Takilma Road, Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. The Concert in the Park series sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce was well at- tended and made a small profit. Next year’s series will be organized by chamber Directors Vicki Gill and Alice Schaeffer. The seven-week series in Jubilee Park concluded on Aug. 4. In Memory: Phoenix Ocean McGuirk August 5, 2005 On Aug. 5, 2005 a beau- tiful baby boy was born at 1:15 p.m. in Grants Pass, Ore. Phoenix Ocean McGuirk was born to Amanda Groves, and Dustin McGuirk, of Cave Junction, Ore. He was only able to stay with us for an hour and a half. But in the glimpse of his life, he left an impres- sion on our hearts for an eternity. He leaves behind a fam- ily who loved him very much, his momma, his papa, and his big brother, Caleb Groves. He also leaves many people in his extended family. He will live in our hearts forever. Thank you to all the people who reached out to help us in our hours of need. You will forever be in our hearts, thoughts and prayers: Namaste! But true to his name, we believe in time he will rise again from his ashes. Wise men once said, “There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night. And if you go, no one may follow; that path is for your steps alone.” We give our children two things: one is roots and the other is wings. We know it was your time to fly Phoenix, but we just wish you could have planted your roots for a little longer. We will be lovin’ you forever, Son. * * * (Editor’s Note: A fee was paid for the preceding) Susan Joy Zosel Arrangements are pend- ing at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors for Cave Junction resident Susan Joy Zosel, 63, who died at home Aug. 11, 2005 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.
