Page 7 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, August 10, 2005 Oregon blackberry crop safe to eat, say agriculture folks itself is unaffected and is not a human health risk. Originally found on the south coast infecting the unwanted, weedy Himala- yan blackberry, Phragmi- dium violaceum also has infected fields of the com- mercial evergreen black- berry in Oregon. Prior to this year, the rust had never been offi- cially confirmed in North America. Positive confirmation of A species of rust fungus confirmed in Himalayan and evergreen blackberry plants in Oregon has now been found in 14 counties, said Oregon Dept. of Agricul- ture (ODA). ODA officials empha- size the Oregon blackberries sold commercially to proc- essors and consumers are safe to eat. While the blackberry rust does affect the plant and its yield at harvest, the fruit P. violaceum in blackberries has now been made in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lincoln, Clatsop, Columbia, Clacka- mas, Multnomah, Yamhill, Marion, Polk, Linn, Benton, and Lane counties. Since rust spores are carried by wind, officials expect the disease will quickly reach the rest of western Oregon. Officials established a “trap garden” in an area of infected Himalayan black- berry on the south coast in late April. In the garden are commercial varieties of blackberry and raspberry intentionally planted to see if the rust will have a nega- tive effect. There is no evidence at this time that P. violaceum affects Oregon’s most valu- able commercial species including Marionberry, Boysenberry, and Logan- berry. ODA continues moni- toring and sampling black- berry species in 28 counties. Saturday, Aug. 13, 1 to 4 p.m. I.V. Senior Center - 520 E.
